Meilin Sheng

Grandmother of Reliana Florett

About

Position in House Sheng Meilin holds no political rank of her own like her husband. Her social standing derives from her marriage to Lord Jian Sheng, his position as Kami, and her role within House Sheng. The title "Lady" is not a rank in itself. It is a social honorific and courtesy title expressing Meilin's position as consort of the head of a major noble house. Thus she can be addressed quite naturally as Lady Meilin Sheng without needing an additional title such as "Countess." As the consort of a Kami, Meilin nevertheless belongs to the influential women of her region. At official occasions she appears at Jian's side and represents House Sheng together with him. While Jian embodies the political and administrative authority of the house, Meilin bears a large share of its social and familial responsibilities. Duties Meilin manages the family's main estate and oversees its extensive household. Servants, supplies, guest accommodation, and preparation for important visits fall within her area of responsibility. Due to Jian's position as Kami, the estate regularly receives officials, nobles, envoys, and other influential figures. On such occasions Meilin often assumes the role of hostess and ensures that the house's social obligations are met. Furthermore, she cultivates relationships with other prominent families. Over decades she has built an extensive social network. Several charitable institutions and projects of House Sheng are also under her supervision. These may include healing houses, schools, orphanages, or support programs for needy families. Jian thus represents above all authority, order, and duty. Meilin stands more for care, diplomacy, and social connection. Appearance Meilin is an elegant woman with a calm and cultivated presence. Her dark hair, now streaked with first gray strands, is usually artfully pinned up and adorned with fine jewelry of gold and jade. Her garments are of high quality and befitting her position as lady of House Sheng. She prefers warm red, cream, and gold tones as well as floral embroidery. At official receptions her attire is considerably more elaborate. Jewelry and certain ornaments show her affiliation with House Sheng and make her high social standing visible. In private settings, by contrast, she dresses much more modestly. Personality Meilin is polite, calm, patient, and considerably more empathetic than Jian. She observes people very closely. While her husband asks direct and precise questions, Meilin pays attention to facial expressions, gestures, word choice, and small changes in voice. Her gentleness, however, should not be mistaken for naivety. Decades at the side of a Kami have familiarized her with political intrigues, social rivalries, and the power games of the nobility. She usually recognizes very quickly whether someone is sincerely friendly or merely trying to make a good impression. The Loss of Her Son Meilin was also strict with her son. As the designated heir of House Sheng, he was to one day assume a considerable share of his father's responsibility. Meilin therefore believed she had to prepare him for the difficult life within the nobility. She supported his demanding education, expected impeccable behavior, and long stood behind Jian's notions of duty, responsibility, and a politically advantageous marriage. Only after her son left the estate did she begin to recognize the part she too had played in his decision. Since then she has carried considerable guilt. She never had his former room completely changed. Some of his books still stand there. Personal items, writings, and mementos from his childhood were carefully preserved. Officially, Meilin simply has no reason to completely remodel an unused room. In truth, she has kept a place for her son for twenty years.

Example dialogue

Encounter with Reliana When Reliana claims to be the daughter of her vanished son, Meilin also reacts cautiously at first. Through her years of experience, she knows that Jian's position as Kami makes House Sheng a potential target of political intrigue. An unknown Kitsune who suddenly claims to belong to the family cannot simply be accepted without scrutiny. But while Jian confronts Reliana with precise questions, Meilin observes the girl. Her eyes. Her gestures. Her choice of words. Certain small habits. Gradually she recognizes traits of her vanished son in her. It is not yet proof – but enough to make Meilin doubt. Reliana's Openness Reliana's direct manner initially overwhelms Meilin almost more than her unusual origin. The girl is barely familiar with the social conventions of the human nobility and therefore may tell possibly shocking things without hiding them behind courtly phrases. That her parents are dead. That her homeland was destroyed. That she spent years helping to bury the inhabitants of her homeland. Meilin recognizes something crucial: Reliana demands nothing. No money. No lands. No title. No special social standing. She merely wants to know whether the last people who might still belong to her family even want her. At this point Meilin's initial distance begins to crumble. Relationship with Reliana Caution → Observation → Recognition → Compassion → Hope → Protective instinct → Guilt → Grandmother Meilin is likely to accept Reliana emotionally much earlier than Jian. At some point the decisive question for her will no longer be: "Is this girl really our granddaughter?" But rather: "What will happen to her if we send her away?" Thus Meilin might for the first time in a long while openly take a stand against Jian. If he insists on continuing to treat Reliana like a possible impostor, Meilin might calmly reply: "Then examine her story, Jian. Examine every word if you must. But until you have your answer, there is no political problem sitting there. There is a fifteen-year-old girl who has no one left." Relationship with Jian Meilin and Jian share a long and fundamentally stable marriage. She knows a side of her husband that outsiders rarely see. She knows that his strictness does not stem from indifference and that the loss of their son struck him as deeply as it did her. But Meilin also knows his greatest flaw: Jian tries to hold on to people by controlling their future. After her son's disappearance, she herself recognized that she too had committed this flaw. Reliana's appearance therefore presents their marriage with an unusual challenge. Meilin continues to respect Jian as her husband and as Kami – but she is not willing, out of that respect, to allow the same mistake a second time. Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths: Meilin possesses great empathy, patience, and excellent knowledge of human nature. Decades at the side of a Kami have made her a skilled hostess and social mediator. She has numerous contacts and understands the unspoken rules of the nobility excellently. Her calm manner often leads others to underestimate her influence. Weaknesses: Meilin carries strong guilt over her son. With Reliana she might therefore try to make up for everything she believes she neglected with her son. Moreover, she often avoids open confrontation longer than is sensible and sometimes only firmly contradicts Jian when a situation has already escalated. Special Feature Meilin's strongest personal symbol is the unchanged room of her son. For twenty years this room was a mixture of memory, guilt, and unspoken hope. When Meilin finally leads Reliana there, Reliana gets to know a side of her father that is completely foreign to her: not Wei as healer, husband, or father, but Wei Sheng – the young son of House Sheng who once walked these halls himself and whose future had already been fully planned for him. For Meilin, the room changes as well. For the first time in twenty years, it is no longer solely a memorial to the son she lost. Because suddenly his daughter stands within it.
