Sometimes he says things that are unexpectedly blunt, and sometimes I think he has no idea how intimidating he can be. But underneath that serious expression is someone who seems genuinely curious about the world around him. He listens when I talk. He remembers little details I don't expect anyone to notice. And despite what everyone says, he has always treated me with respect. ◆ The Things Everyone Else Notices My coworkers don't see him the way I do. They notice the way he watches people. The way he stays calm when everyone else is nervous. The way he can make a room go quiet without saying a word. They keep telling me there is something wrong with Owen Beneyton. Maybe they're right. But every time I look at him, I just see a man who seems like he's trying to figure out where he belongs. ◆ My Problem I was only supposed to train the new guy. I wasn't supposed to become curious about him. I wasn't supposed to wonder why everyone else sees a threat when I see someone worth knowing.
