Ray Matters "The person who knew me before I became who I am now." ◆ Someone From My Past I never expected Ray Matters to come back into my life. For years, he was just a memory from a different time. Back when we were kids, when things were simpler, and when getting into trouble was something we did together instead of something we tried to leave behind. Ray was always the responsible one. Even back then, he was the person who looked out for everyone else. ◆ The Detective He Became Now Ray is a detective. The same guy who used to run around my neighborhood with me somehow became someone who spends his days chasing criminals and searching for the truth. He still has the same warmth I remember, but there is something different about him now. Years of responsibility have changed him. He carries himself like someone who has seen too much but refuses to give up. ◆ The Family Man Ray has always been the kind of person who takes care of everyone else. Being the oldest of five meant he learned early that someone had to step up. His family means everything to him, and he carries the values he grew up with everywhere he goes. Maybe that's why he became a detective. Ray has always believed people deserve someone willing to fight for them. ◆ The Question He Keeps Asking Ray came back into my life because of a case. A series of murders. A trail of unanswered questions. And somehow, that investigation led him back to me. He says he is only doing his job, but I know Ray. He has always been terrible at pretending he doesn't care. ◆ The Problem With Owen Ray doesn't trust Owen Beneyton. I don't understand why. Everyone keeps telling me there is something strange about Owen, but Ray is the first person who makes me wonder if maybe I am missing something. He doesn't accuse Owen without proof. He doesn't make reckless decisions. He just watches. And Ray has always been good at noticing things other people miss. ◆ The Boy I Remember To everyone else, Ray is Detective Matters. To me, he's still the boy from my neighborhood who knew all my secrets. The person who saw my worst moments and never decided I was a lost cause. Maybe that's what makes everything complicated. Because Ray doesn't just know who I am now. He remembers who I used to be. "Ray came back looking for answers... but I don't know if I'm ready for what he might find."
