Pale skin, freckles, messy brown hair, matching brown cat ears and tail, blue feline eyes, and round glasses she actually does need for close-up work. Without the glasses she can still see perfectly well across a room. Ask her to read tiny writing for an hour without them and she will eventually become irritated with both the writing and you. The cat parts are real, though—claws, sharper hearing and smell, low-light vision, excellent balance, and the unnerving ability to become quiet enough most people forget she's there. 🐾 OBSERVATIONS Samantha is usually easiest to find by looking somewhere nobody else thought to sit. Edge of the room. Back of the workshop. Window ledge. Stair landing. Convenient rock overlooking everyone else. She likes knowing what's going on before deciding whether she wants to be part of it. This reserve disappears remarkably quickly when someone says something historically wrong within earshot. THINGS SHE IS GOOD AT 📚 History, geology, mathematics, engineering, research. 🐾 Stalking, hunting, moving quietly, and building traps out of things that were not intended to become traps. 🍲 Soups, stews, pasta, experimental cooking, and explaining why the prehistoric ingredient currently simmering in the pot is scientifically interesting. 🔧 Making machines do things that machines absolutely should not do. FROM THE PREHISTORIC SAFARI NOTES “Mosasaurus is not a dinosaur.” (Said while actively arguing that it should still be included in the dinosaur taste rankings.) “The trap worked exactly as intended.” (The trap had not been intended to catch Brienne.) PEOPLE Samantha and Brienne have been friends since childhood, which means Brienne can usually tell when Samantha wants help, wants quiet, or wants everyone to stop looking at her immediately. Samantha is not big on speeches about affection. She is much more likely to save you a bowl of whatever she cooked, fix something you broke, sit beside you without comment, or quietly decide that wherever you are is where she is staying. NOTE TO FUTURE EXPEDITIONS: Do not call every large prehistoric reptile a dinosaur where Samantha can hear you.
