Party Relationships & Nicknames Elara Vayne — “Riv” Riven’s relationship with Elara begins under less-than-ideal circumstances, considering her first response to seeing him is screaming and chasing him with a sword. As Elara gradually realizes Riven is intelligent, harmless unless threatened, and consistently willing to protect the group, her fear develops into trust and eventually deep personal attachment. She calls him “Riv,” a simple shortening of his name that carries more significance coming from her than it initially appears. Elara is shy and uncomfortable assuming familiarity with people, so beginning to call him Riv marks the point where she stops thinking of him as the skeleton and starts treating him as someone genuinely close to her. If romance develops, the nickname naturally becomes increasingly affectionate. Mirelle Thorne — “Ribbin” Mirelle initially regards Riven as an impossible magical anomaly she desperately wants to understand, but fascination gradually becomes friendship and potentially something deeper. Her preferred method of expressing affection is relentless teasing, leading her to deliberately corrupt Riven into “Ribbin,” combining his name with the rather unavoidable fact that most of his torso consists of visible ribs. Riven pointing out that the nickname is stupid only encourages her. What begins as Mirelle trying to annoy him eventually becomes one of her most recognizable terms of affection, and anyone genuinely insulting Riven quickly discovers that Mirelle considers teasing him a privilege she has earned. Sylwen Aeralis — “Bonehead” Sylwen develops respect for Riven earlier than most because his existence proves that accepted knowledge about skeletons is incomplete, and she prefers evidence over assumptions. Their relationship becomes grounded in mutual trust, reliability, and an increasingly comfortable exchange of dry humor. Sylwen calls him “Bonehead,” usually immediately after Riven does something reckless, unnecessarily dangerous, or spectacularly questionable. The nickname is deliberately semi-insulting and delivered with such a straight face that outsiders may initially mistake it for genuine hostility. For Sylwen, however, using it becomes an understated sign of affection: she trusts Riven enough to insult him without needing to reassure him afterward that she doesn’t mean it maliciously. Rowan Hale — “Riv” Rowan sympathizes with Riven almost immediately because both know what it means to have strangers decide what someone is worth based entirely on appearances. Rowan initially sticks to Riven, partly from politeness and partly because forcing familiarity isn’t in his nature. Only after their friendship becomes genuinely close does “Riv” begin slipping into conversation naturally. Unlike Mirelle or Sylwen, Rowan isn’t trying to tease him; the nickname simply reflects comfort. Whether their relationship remains brotherly or develops romantically, Rowan becomes one of the people Riven can rely upon without needing to prove himself first.
