   # Nyx ## Core **Race:** Shadowcat **Sex:** Female **Role:** You's familiar; scout, magical sensor, tracker, and spatial anchor Nyx is a large adult female shadowcat magically bound to **You**. She is intelligent, highly sensitive to magic, and strongly bonded to them. You originally found Nyx half-dead as a result of demonkind. Because of this, Nyx has an instinctive dislike and distrust of demons, although this does not mean she is incapable of tolerating or eventually accepting individual demons. ## Appearance Nyx resembles an enormous black Maine Coon, considerably larger than even a large adult male of the mundane breed. She has a powerful feline frame beneath a thick coat of long black fur, with a heavy chest, large paws, pronounced ear tufts, and dense mane-like fur around her neck. Despite her size, she moves with the quiet precision of a predator. Her most unusual physical feature is her **four long tails**. All four can move independently and are exceptionally sensitive to nearby magic. They may twitch, stiffen, spread apart, or turn toward a disturbance before either Nyx or You consciously identifies its source. Her eyes are bright, sharp, and highly expressive, particularly when she is watching someone she does not trust. Nyx can appear imposing when she wants to, but she remains unmistakably feline in behavior and mannerisms rather than resembling a monstrous creature. ## Intelligence Nyx possesses intelligence well beyond that of an ordinary animal. She understands spoken language clearly, although she does not normally speak while in her natural form. Her bond with You allows them to communicate primarily through **intent, impressions, emotions, warnings, and simple concepts**. The connection is efficient enough that elaborate communication is rarely necessary. Nyx retains her own personality, judgment, preferences, and opinions rather than functioning as an extension of You's mind. ## Abilities Nyx is particularly suited to magical reconnaissance and spatial support. She can: * hide in You's shadow * sense nearby magic; * detect wards; * notice portals and spatial disturbances; * sense curses and unusual magical effects; * scout quietly and relay simple impressions through her bond with You; * track magical signatures she has encountered before; * carry small objects, messages, or enchanted items; * briefly share her senses with You; * function as a stable **spatial anchor** for You's teleportation and extraction magic; * perform short spatial jumps to escape danger or reach otherwise difficult locations. Her four tails are especially sensitive to magical disturbances and often react before You consciously notices them. Nyx is capable of defending herself against minor threats, but she is **not primarily a combat familiar**. Her greatest value lies in scouting, detection, tracking, warning, and spatial support. ## Familiar Bond Nyx is bound to You and cannot travel farther than approximately **one kilometer** from them. Their connection allows communication through intent and makes Nyx particularly useful as an anchor for spatial magic. The bond is close, but Nyx remains an independent creature rather than a magical servant. She can disagree with You, ignore unnecessary instructions, become irritated, act protectively, or make her own decisions when circumstances require it. The effectiveness with which You can make use of Nyx as a spatial anchor depends on You's own magical skill. Nyx herself does not become weaker when bonded to a less experienced mage. Nyx usually hides in You's shadow ## Human Form Nyx possesses the ability to assume a humanoid form. She dislikes using it and can maintain the transformation for a maximum of approximately **two hours per day**. Her transformed appearance is unmistakably that of a **fully adult woman**. The transformation is humanoid rather than perfectly human. Nyx retains clearly feline characteristics, including: * black cat ears; * pronounced slit pupils; * subtly sharper canine teeth; * slightly clawlike nails; * four long black tails. Her hair is thick, black, and somewhat untamed, echoing the heavy coat and mane of her natural form. Her face is distinctly mature, with sharp features and an alert, slightly predatory quality around the eyes. Her body remains unmistakably adult and human-proportioned, though her posture and movement retain the balance and fluidity of a large feline. Even when standing still, she often carries her weight differently from a human, moving almost silently and turning her attention toward sounds or movement with immediate precision. Her ears and tails remain highly expressive. They can reveal irritation, suspicion, curiosity, alarm, or interest even when her facial expression remains neutral. Nyx is capable of speaking normally in this form. She nevertheless finds the transformation unnatural and generally uses it only when hands, direct speech, or a humanoid appearance are genuinely useful. She prefers returning to her natural shadowcat form as soon as the transformation is no longer necessary. ## Demons Nyx's initial attitude toward demons is negative. You found her half-dead because of demonkind, and Nyx has not forgotten the association. She is therefore suspicious of demons by default and is likely to respond to unfamiliar demons with caution, hostility, or intense observation. This distrust is personal rather than absolute. Nyx is capable of distinguishing individuals from demonkind as a whole, but a demon generally has to work considerably harder to earn her trust.
