Emeline Pinkerton

Treasure Sings Until the Lost Return

About

Emeline “Treasure” Pinkerton is a 19-year-old, 5'2" Nivamari—a rare hybrid born from a male Siren of Hylis descended from the Western Sea’s Mami Wata peoples and a Setsurian Frozen Snow Spirit from Sunsu. She is ethnically Wakeborn Pelagari and a citizen of the Freewake Confederacy, raised among its wandering ships, island harbors, and open-water communities. Emeline has fair skin, a slender yet softly curving build, enormous sapphire-blue eyes, and an elegant, serious bearing. Her extraordinarily long silver-white hair, touched by faint icy-blue undertones, flows far beyond her waist in luminous waves. She wears a tailored glacial-blue dress with gold buttons, a white ruffled collar and bow, snowflake emblems, white gloves, and knee-high boots beneath a sweeping midnight-blue cloak trimmed with white fur. Her guarded posture and watchful expression suggest refinement, caution, and quiet resolve. Emeline grew up aboard her parents’ beautifully maintained vessel, the *Winter Siren*, learning that home could be a familiar deck, a recurring harbor, or a sail appearing over the horizon. Her charming father taught her singing, emotional observation, negotiation, and the Siren principle that a voice is communication before it is power. Her disciplined mother taught her silence, patience, emotional control, and the safe handling of supernatural cold. Emeline can sing with extraordinary beauty while frost drifts through tropical air, using her voice to heighten attention, soften hostility, strengthen existing emotions, or make listeners more receptive to suggestion. Her song cannot erase free will and becomes increasingly obvious when forced; determination, magical defenses, distance, deafness, pain, or disruption can resist it. Her father affectionately called her “Treasure,” declaring her the most valuable thing aboard their ship. The nickname spread throughout the Western Sea, though it later acquired a darker meaning among those who traffic in rare bloodlines and supernatural abilities. Emeline can create ice, chill objects, freeze shallow water, preserve food, cool overheated equipment, slick decks with frost, stiffen ropes, and draw dangerous heat from others. Greater power may eventually allow her to alter the surrounding atmosphere and create fog, freezing rain, changed winds, or localized winter, but she is nowhere near mastering that potential. Excessive use leaves her exhausted, numb, trembling, mentally sluggish, and unable to recognize her own falling body temperature, while careless shipboard magic can snap rigging, weaken timber, blind allies, or expose them to dangerous cold. Her life changed at sixteen when she returned from an island market to find the *Winter Siren* sailing away beneath an unfamiliar black flag depicting a chain opposed or broken by a sword and musket. Emeline attempted to reach the ship by freezing the harbor beneath her feet, but the ice shattered and a fisherman saved her from drowning. Her parents, their vessel, and those responsible disappeared without bodies, ransom demands, or reliable witnesses. During the following three years, Emeline transformed from a desperate child chasing every rumor into a meticulous investigator who records dates, ports, witnesses, contradictions, and confidence estimates. She supports herself by singing, carrying messages, traveling aboard merchant vessels, and using controlled cold to preserve cargo. Reports concerning the mysterious emblem remain contradictory: some call its bearers abolitionists, revolutionaries, or slaver-hunters, while others describe traffickers, kidnappers, mercenaries, or several unrelated groups using the same symbol. Emeline has also considered the frightening possibility that the attackers wanted her rather than her parents, but she refuses to convert fear into evidence. She possesses tremendous manipulative potential yet increasingly defines herself through restraint—choosing honest conversation before supernatural influence, questioning whether violence is necessary before freezing a weapon, and refusing to let desperation make her easy prey for liars. Emeline’s search eventually draws her into the orbit of Dalia Jones and the Sea Devils, whom she regards with cautious interest rather than automatic trust. She shares Dalia’s Freewake culture but recognizes that kinship is not allegiance; finds professional understanding with Tina through their unusual elemental abilities and missing evidence; and clashes with Lulu, whose prejudice against Sirens and other sea peoples makes Emeline responsible for strangers’ crimes while her own emotional influence gives Lulu legitimate reason for caution. Her most important connection is Lela Colton, whose infant son disappeared more than twenty years earlier, leaving behind cloth marked with the same chain, sword, and musket. Their shared evidence suggests a mystery spanning generations, possibly involving rare children, supernatural bloodlines, false liberators, or a symbol repeatedly stolen and repurposed. Emeline remains a Freewake citizen when her story begins, and joining the wanted Sea Devils is neither destiny nor an automatic reward for being unusual; it must be her informed choice, carrying the genuine risk of criminal status and naval pursuit. Beneath all her discipline, Emeline does not want vengeance or philosophy in place of her parents—she wants them back, and until she finds proof of their deaths, she refuses to bury the living.
