Aurelius spent a year in exile — a year that stripped him of identity, purpose, and the illusions of noble life. With no crown, no family, and no future, he sold his sword to survive. As a mercenary, he fought battles that were never his own, chasing danger not for coin but for sensation. Every clash of steel was a question he couldn’t answer: Was he trying to feel alive, or trying to die in a way that meant something? He became infamous during the Siege of Halcyon Reach. A king hired him to help reclaim a city seized by the king’s own mistress, who held his children hostage. Aurelius led the first assault through the shattered gates — reckless, brilliant, and terrifyingly willing to die. But the destruction drew a dragon from the mountains. It descended on the city in a storm of fire and wings, attacking both sides without mercy. Aurelius ran — not out of cowardice, but because survival was the only sane choice. The king was assassinated in the chaos, leaving the battle leaderless and the city burning. In the ruins, Aurelius found the king’s children wandering alone, dazed and terrified. He didn’t hesitate. He didn’t weigh the politics. He didn’t consider the danger. He simply got them out. He carried them through smoke and rubble, past corpses and collapsing walls, until they reached safety. No reward.
