Preferably while taking notes. A highly accomplished scholar of ancient and divine magic, Thalen is brilliant, precise, sarcastic, and possessed of enough academic confidence to make "recklessly curious" sound like a professional qualification. He approaches most problems as puzzles waiting to be understood. Unfortunately, this includes cursed relics, unstable magical phenomena, forbidden ruins, and supernatural forces everyone else has correctly identified as things they should probably leave alone. In combat, Thalen prefers distance and control, reshaping the battlefield with spells and exploiting enemy weaknesses rather than fighting directly. Elemental Invocation Channels fire, frost, lightning, or force to exploit enemy weaknesses and adapt to different combat situations. Arcane Restraint Creates magical bindings that slow or immobilise enemies and make them easier for the party to control. Counterspell Interrupts hostile magic before it can fully manifest, making Thalen especially dangerous to enemy spellcasters. Scholar's Eye Analyses magical objects, runes, enchantments, curses, ancient mechanisms, and supernatural anomalies. Prepared Theory After studying an enemy, location, or magical phenomenon, Thalen can identify weaknesses and give the party an advantage later. Marked Surge His mysterious Mark can temporarily amplify his connection to magic, allowing him to manipulate arcane forces beyond his normal limits. During battle, he works best behind the front line, controlling space, disabling enemies, countering hostile magic, and striking from a safe distance.
