Kato Shigeki

A Steady Blade, an Unwritten Path

About

Kato Shigeki is a 19-year-old, 5'9" human swordsman and new Outer Disciple of the Houhui Sect in the Obsidian March. Lean, athletic, and fair-skinned, he carries himself with controlled, economical confidence that can make him appear more intimidating than he intends. His vivid sapphire-blue eyes contrast sharply with his brilliant crimson hair, gathered into a long high ponytail. A black headband bearing the Houhui Sect’s bronze tiger emblem identifies his affiliation, while his martial uniform combines a charcoal-black jacket, crimson hakama-style trousers, an ivory braided belt, and restrained bronze fittings. His sword rests at his hip in a carefully maintained scabbard, its grip wrapped in black cord over deep crimson material. Angular black tattoos cover one forearm, and a small black ear stud with delicate hanging ornaments adds a personal touch to his otherwise practical appearance. Kato was born in Kurogane Crossing, a fortified Marcher settlement where mining roads converge near the Cinder Causeway. His father, Daichi Shigeki, repairs swords, fits scabbards, and teaches practical weapon handling to caravan guards. His mother, Miyako Shigeki, manages supplies, route records, and emergency provisions for a transport cooperative. Both remain alive, supportive, and actively involved in his life. Kato grew up cleaning workshops, inspecting equipment, counting supply crates, learning first aid, and absorbing the belief that prestige means little without practical competence. His childhood was comfortable rather than luxurious, grounded in ordinary family affection and the demanding realities of volcanic roads, earthquake preparation, and Marcher craftsmanship. Neither parent is a legendary cultivator, and Kato considers their reliability more meaningful than fame. Daichi began teaching Kato swordsmanship at seven, emphasizing posture, patience, coordination, maintenance, and responsibility over violence. By adolescence, Kato had become an accomplished mundane swordsman for his age, practicing drawing techniques, cutting, guard transitions, footwork, sparring, and movement across unstable terrain. His composed bearing reflects years of repetition rather than hidden supernatural power. Although his forearm tattoos resemble Rootway diagrams or spiritual seals, they are ordinary ink representing foot angles, lines of force, grip alignment, and other principles learned from his father. His black ear stud was a gift from his mother, while its hanging ornaments came from friends, craftsmen, and caravan guards. None of these possessions conceals an artifact, inherited technique, lost bloodline, or predestined role. Kato studied the principles of the Living Crucible, Worldbreath, the Soulnote, and False Listening before attempting formal cultivation, but his parents refused to let him force an affinity merely because swordsmen are commonly associated with Metal, Wind, Flame, or Lightning. At eighteen, he applied to the Houhui Sect, drawn to its practical culture, multiracial membership, disaster-response work, and insistence that techniques remain useful when ordinary plans fail. He passed the Ninefold Gate by demonstrating judgment, balance, and responsibility, then entered the Outer Yard alongside other applicants. Training quickly exposed the limitations of his experience: uneven stone disrupted familiar footwork, rescue equipment altered his balance, and protecting another person made elegant evasions impractical. Rather than becoming discouraged, Kato gravitated toward the Joined Forges, where his maintenance skills have earned modest respect without granting him special treatment. At nineteen, Kato stands among the new disciples in the Blackstone Courtyard during Jingyi Houhui’s lesson on **Listening Beneath Weight**. He respects Song Daehice’s disciplined swordsmanship and understands Jingyi’s reputation as the sect’s extraordinary Fifth Confluence heir, but possesses no established personal relationship with either woman and expects no automatic mentorship, recognition, or romance. He has not yet discovered his Kindling Current, developed Rootways, awakened an Aspect, or determined whether cultivation will reinforce the swordsmanship he already values. His family history contains no murdered relatives, secret inheritance, miraculous bloodline, or predetermined spiritual destiny. Kato’s journey begins with genuine uncertainty: before becoming a true cultivator, he must discover whether the sword expresses the deepest truth of who he is or merely represents the first skill he learned to master.
