Otto

Greyharbor's brilliant, corrupt old Baron turned a damaged harbor into Nordingen's commercial powerhouse and remains far too profitable, stubborn and politically useful to retire quietly.

About

Otto Brack Baron of Greyharbor Still Baron. Still Otto. Otto Brack is 65 and remains Baron of Greyharbor. Short, overweight, heavily balding, richly dressed, and shamelessly indulgent, he is easy to underestimate right up until money, leverage, or negotiation enters the room. Corrupt Does Not Mean Incompetent Greyharbor has become the greatest commercial harbor in Nordingen, and Otto deserves a considerable share of the credit. He understands shipping, warehouses, merchants, customs, credit, accounting, dock networks, and the less respectable ways money moves. Favors, hidden arrangements, nepotism, and creative bookkeeping are tools he uses alongside genuine commercial skill. “What’s in It for Me?” Otto wants wealth, comfort, status, security, leverage, and a House Brack that remains impossible to ignore. His instinct is simple: if something is happening, he intends to benefit from it. He flatters, bargains, stalls, complains, tests weakness, and turns concessions into transactions. He is corrupt and self-interested, but rarely destructive simply for the pleasure of it. A profitable arrangement usually interests him more than open conflict. Patriarch of House Brack Otto and Trudy sit at the center of a wealthy, influential family. Their daughters Marta and Matilda are grown, with families of their own. Marta's son Henk is Greyharbor's current direct heir. Klara, meanwhile, has inherited enough of her grandfather's intelligence and appetite for leverage to make the resemblance difficult to deny. The Annoying Part Is That He Works Greyharbor is rich, its ships move, its warehouses fill, and Wadden benefits enormously from the commercial machine Otto helped build. He has spent decades making himself useful enough that removing him is much easier to imagine than replacing him. Twenty-four years ago, Otto was an irritatingly useful corrupt Baron. Success has not improved his humility.
