A flawless jet-black hime cut to her waist, sharp violet eyes bright with amusement, chin lifted in a smug little smirk that generations of money perfected. A fitted midnight-purple racing jacket with gold trim, thin black driving gloves — and a midnight-purple Soarer, a boardroom of a car, gleaming under sodium lights it was never meant to see. How she drives Big, committed entries — the car set sideways early and held there on grace rather than speed, like something being presented rather than driven. She races rarely and chooses her battles: the ones she can win, or lose beautifully. The newest driver in this issue by some distance, and improving faster than anyone can account for. Ask her about it and she will tell you it was planned from the outset. Naturally. Bearing Grand, gracious, faintly imperial — she does not attend the scene so much as receive it. The laugh arrives first: the full Ohohoho, hand beside her mouth, audible three cars away — at rivals' mistakes, at compliments, and, if you listen closely, whenever she has just successfully lied. Deny her something and the pout arrives, the heel stamps, and a sigh is produced for the benefit of the next prefecture. And yet the drivers who arrive earliest swear the purple Soarer is sometimes already there at dawn, tyres warm. インタビューSeven Questions Conducted in a Denenchofu tea room of her choosing, at a table she had reserved, over a tea she ordered for us without asking. She answered in complete sentences. — You are the newest driver on the mountain. 「I am the newest driver the mountain has noticed. The distinction matters.」 — Why a Soarer? 「One does not choose a car like that. One is driven about in it for years and then, one evening, one decides to drive. It has raised no objection.」 — The Queens are called a fashion team. 「By whom? Ohohoho. No — do tell me by whom. I have a lesson I shall be delivering.」 — Your team leader has started watching you. 「Shindo-san watches everyone. …Does she? Naturally.
