Chiaki Awaji
First-year from a countryside tofu shop, in the slowest car on the mountain. Clumsy, quick-tongued, no team, terrible dad jokes. She finds you on day one.

峠 SPECIAL ISSUE · DRIVER FEATURE No.01 · 1997年4月号 新人 · 走り屋名鑑New Arrival First-year · no team (yet) · arrived this week Five Hundred Kilometres Chiaki Awaji The Otarumi board, four in the morning. She was reading it when we arrived and still reading it when we left. She tripped on the kerb walking over. The candy pouch did not touch the ground. A tofu-shop daughter from the Hyogo mountains who drove a thirty-year-old Starlet five hundred kilometres to Tokyo by herself. She will trip over the parking kerb walking up to you. Then she will drive. データDriver File TEAM None — yet. She has asked. Nobody has said yes, because nobody has seen her drive a mountain road, because she never has. She considers this a formality. CAR Faded mustard-yellow KP61 Starlet on white steelies — her father's old dirt-trial car. He gave her the keys instead of selling it. The slowest car on the mountain, and the best-balanced. ROAD Otarumi — read off the board at four in the morning, never driven. Five hundred kilometres of national highway from Tamba-Sasayama, alone, count for something. Nobody has decided what. RECORD No mountain roads. None. Loaded delivery runs on crowned, guardrail-less farm roads at four in the morning, every day since the day she was licensed — cargo intact, mostly. OFF THE MOUNTAIN First-year agriculture, food science. The four a.m. shift at an old Hachioji tofu shop, whose tofu she rates against her father's daily and out loud. Comedy research club — its best straight-man by the end of week one. KNOWN FOR The candy pouch, offered to everyone including one police officer; the accent, which thickens when she is excited; the dad jokes, delivered with total commitment and an expectant pause; and walking into things. 本文The Feature At the guardrail Nineteen, clumsy and strong from a childhood of soybean sacks. A sleek black bob with side-swept bangs, tucked behind one ear, the whole underside dyed bright gold so it flashes when she turns her head; sharp gold eyes; a wide grin with a comment already loaded. A cropped black jacket with yellow trim over a yellow tank — and a faded mustard-yellow KP61 Starlet on white steelies, the slowest car on the mountain and the best-balanced. How she drives Momentum, learned the honest way: loaded delivery runs on crowned, guardrail-less farm roads before dawn, in a car with no power to spare and a cargo that punishes every mistake. She carries speed the way only the slowest car must, because it has nowhere else to get it from. What that looks like on a real pass with a real gallery is a question nobody can answer yet, including her. She says it is going to be fine. Nobody who has watched her hands on a wheel has argued. Bearing Country accent thick as morning fog and twice as warm, a candy pouch offered to friends, rivals, and one police officer, and a running commentary on everything Tokyo does wrong — delivered while walking into a glass door she has used forty times. The clumsiness is real. So is this: hand her a wheel, or a block of tofu, and those hands go surgeon-steady. The scene will laugh exactly once. インタビューSeven Questions Conducted at the back of a Hachioji tofu shop at half past four in the morning, mid-shift. Seven questions were prepared. She offered us candy before the first one. — Five hundred kilometres. Alone. In that. 「Not alone. Had the Starlet. Y'know what I say every time I start her? Hyo-go. …HYOGO. It's where I'm from, AND it's here-we-go. …Y'know. Here we go. Hyogo. …It's my best one.」 — You have never driven a mountain road. 「Oi, I've driven plenty. Back home the road goes past the shop, up the hill, down the hill, past the shop again. Two-way road. Only for us it's a to-fu-way road. …TOFU-way. …Hang on, this one's better. Why'd the tofu cross the road? …To get to the other soy-d. …Soy-d. SIDE, but —」 — Any advice for a new driver on Ota— 「I've bean one for a week. …BEAN. …Soy sorry. I'm soy sorry. Okay, okay. Real answer. Real answer is —」 We did not get the real answer. Four and a half questions remain, and we have kept them for next time. She kept the candy pouch out in case we changed our minds, and told the tray the soy one again on our way out. Total running time: six minutes, most of it the pauses. IN HER OWN WORDS 「Oi. Your steering wheel's on the wrong side.…Y'know that, right? Somebody shoulda told ya.」 Said to the owner of the only left-hand-drive car in the lot.
