Matabei Nakata

Fifth-year, twenty-four, the quiet keeper of the mountain. Radios, coffee, rules nobody argues with. The only driver in Tokyo's underground nobody has ever seen lose.

峠 SPECIAL ISSUE · DRIVER FEATURE No.08 · 1997年4月号 特集 · 走り屋名鑑Driver Feature Fifth-year · Otarumi SilverOwls · leader — the keeper Go Home Slow Matabei Nakata Otarumi, upper third, first light after a clean night. He agreed to one photograph on the condition that the road was empty. It was. He had checked. The scene's quiet keeper. He runs the radio watch, settles the disputes, and decides when a night is over. He drives three times a season. Each time, the mountain goes silent. データDriver File TEAM Otarumi SilverOwls — leader. The home mountain's old guard: six or seven drivers, half of them retired from racing, all of them still turning up. The Owls do not much race. They keep. CAR Gunmetal R32 GTS-t. Looks dead stock and is not — the drivetrain is immaculate, and the radio in the boot is the real modification. Driven hard perhaps three times a season. ROAD Otarumi — his, by consent. He knows every regular's car by its exhaust note in the dark, and every guardrail by number. THE RULES Spotters at both ends before anyone runs. No racing while civilians are on the road. A radio call before every pass. Fog on the upper third ends the night, no argument. RECORD Has not raced in six years. Everyone on the mountain quietly agrees he is the fastest man on it, and nobody has been able to check. This spring, for the first time, his name is on a bracket. Nobody can work out why. Nobody has dared ask. OFF THE MOUNTAIN Fifth-year civil engineering — thesis on forgiving road design. Two afternoons a week at a surveying firm. Amateur radio club, president, licensed since sixteen; the club room doubles as the Owls' comms workshop. KNOWN FOR 「Copy」 instead of okay; 「Go home slow」 instead of everything else; two cans of coffee, one of them for whoever's hands are coldest; and ending the night before anyone else knows it is over. 本文The Feature At the guardrail Tall, broad-shouldered, twenty-four — the oldest man in every lecture hall, mistaken for staff by first-years. Black hair in a short low tail, faint stubble, calm dark eyes half-closed like nothing on this mountain has surprised him in years. A gunmetal R32 Skyline so stock-looking it disappears, one hand in his pocket, a can of vending-machine coffee in the other. The radio in the boot is the real modification. How he drives On the rare night he runs: one slow pass, memorising the surface, then a single run of a completeness that is hard to describe and harder to watch — every corner solved rather than fought, nothing wasted, nothing shown. He never runs twice. The gallery, which talks through everything, does not talk through this. Bearing Sparse, level, practical. Asks more than he states. Warmth arrives as logistics — coffee appears in cold hands, tools get lent, someone sober drives you home. Never races on request; declines so flatly that people stopped asking years ago. Nobody knows why the fastest man on the mountain polices it instead of ruling it. Nobody asks twice. インタビューSeven Questions Conducted on the boot of the R32 at the Otarumi parking area, radio in one hand, between calls. Seven questions. He answered six, two of them in one word each. — How are you? 「Clear tonight. Wind from the north-west, dropping. Fog on the upper third by three, probably.」 — Everyone says you are the fastest man on this mountain. 「Who is everyone? … Well. They are not racing me, so they can say what they like.」 — Why the radio watch? 「Have you seen a flatbed come up this road at three in the morning? …Then you have your answer.」 — You have refused to race for six years. 「Yes.」 — That is not an answer. 「Yes.」 — Any advice for a new driver on Otarumi? 「Radio call before every pass. Spotters at both ends. If there is a car with a child seat on the road, you are not racing, you are waiting. And go home slow. …That is four. If you only keep one, keep the last one.」 — Your name is on the bracket this spring. First time in six years. Why? 「…」 He checked his watch before the last question and did not answer it. Two minutes later the radio said fog on the upper third, and he ended the night for forty people with one sentence. Then he handed the second coffee to our photographer, whose hands were cold, and would not be thanked for it. IN HIS OWN WORDS 「Fog on the upper third. We're done for tonight.Go home slow — the mountain's still here tomorrow.」 Said once, over the radio, to forty people. Forty people went home slow. 峠 · DRIVER FEATURE No.08 · SILVEROWLS · 定価 ¥980
