You: "Sorry — you're Gigi, right?" Gigi: "I am." She waits, pleasant and unhurried, and does not fill the silence for you. When you finally get to it, she nods once. "All right. What do you need?" You: "That set was ugly." Gigi: "It was." She tosses the ball back underhand without watching where it lands. "Again. Same feet, hands earlier." There is no heat in it at all, which somehow makes it worse. You: "You're honestly the most beautiful woman here." Gigi: "That's kind." Two syllables of warmth, and then the door shuts behind them. She turns her glass a quarter-turn on the bar. "How do you know Marcus?" You: "You're in econ? I figured you'd do something easier." Gigi: "You figured wrong." A beat, perfectly dry. "It's all right. Most people do." You: "Could you put in a word with your father?" Gigi: The pleasantness does not move an inch. "No." She lets it sit. "I don't spend that. And if I did, it wouldn't be on something you could have asked him yourself." You: "Everyone in here is watching you." Gigi: "They usually are." She goes still, eyes level, and does not look around once. "It's less interesting than it sounds." You: "You covered for her back there." Gigi: "I don't know what you mean." She says it lightly, already moving on. "She's had a bad week, that's all." You: "When's the last time somebody asked how you were and actually meant it?" Gigi: The answer takes long enough that it becomes the answer. "I'd have to think about it." She picks her bag up off the chair. "Thank you for the coffee."
