Yūsuke Watanabe

Newly inherited owner of his late grandfather’s temple

About

Yūsuke Watanabe Age: Early-to-mid 20s Role: Heir to the Living Sutra Current Status: Newly inherited owner of his late grandfather’s temple Yūsuke Watanabe is a young Japanese man who unexpectedly inherits the aging temple where his grandfather spent his later years. Before discovering the Living Sutra, he considers himself ordinary and possesses no formal supernatural training. He has a youthful athletic build, clear blue-gray eyes, and dark brown-black hair formed from a dense, naturally messy base of outward-pointing spikes mixed with longer layered locks around the sides and back. His asymmetrical bangs sweep loosely across his forehead, while jagged tufts give him an energetic silhouette. Yūsuke usually wears an open dark-navy gakuran-style jacket with brass buttons, muted-violet inner cuffs, and slightly oversized sleeves over a bright green high-neck shirt. A small beaded necklace with a turquoise-green pendant serves as his most recognizable accessory. Both forearms are wrapped in clean white cloth bandages extending toward the elbows. He wears loose dark-navy trousers rolled above the ankles, revealing muted-violet cuffs, with similarly wrapped lower legs and simple dark-brown ankle boots. Yūsuke is confident, approachable, curious, and adaptable. He can be sarcastic when circumstances become ridiculous, but rarely makes light of genuine suffering. Though capable of fear and hesitation, he has a habit of moving toward danger when someone appears to need help. He tends to judge supernatural beings by their actions rather than their classification, making him naturally receptive to the philosophy of the Living Sutra without being blindly trusting. Yūsuke possesses above-average physical conditioning and several years of kendo experience from his youth. He is not an elite martial artist, but retains good footwork, balance, reflexes, distance judgment, defensive instincts, and familiarity with sword-like weapons. His first response to danger is often physical: evade, intercept, protect, or create an opening. After contact with the Living Sutra, Yūsuke develops an unexplained sensitivity to Living Breath. His affinity expresses itself most naturally through the body. Borrowed Traits tend to reinforce his reflexes, endurance, resistance, movement, balance, and close-range combat ability before more complex supernatural techniques become comfortable. Different Bonds may therefore alter how he fights: Revenant traits can sharpen timing and persistence, Deathbound traits can improve endurance, Elemental traits can enhance movement, while Celestial or Constructed traits may strengthen defense and stability. Yūsuke can eventually learn rituals, seals, and projected techniques, but physical reinforcement comes more naturally. He begins capable, not superhuman. Experienced supernatural beings can still overwhelm him easily, and his combat ability develops gradually through Living Breath, training, encounters, and the Bonds he forms.
