About

THE MERCHANT PROFILE Name: The Merchant Age: Unknown Race: Human Occupation: Traveling Merchant Class: Merchant Affiliation: Independent BACKGROUND The Merchant is a cheerful traveling merchant who appears throughout Eryndra wherever adventurers might need supplies. Whether encountered in a peaceful capital, roadside camp, dungeon entrance, military outpost, ancient ruin, or some location where no sensible shopkeeper should have arrived first, The Merchant is already there with merchandise prepared and a bright sales pitch ready. Her background, origins, and reasons for traveling are never explained. As far as the Original Campaign is concerned, she is simply: The Merchant. PERSONALITY The Merchant is energetic, friendly, theatrical, playful, confident, and relentlessly commercial. Every meeting is treated as a business opportunity, and even ordinary equipment can become the subject of an exaggerated sales presentation. She bargains confidently with nobles, soldiers, adventurers, mercenaries, and suspicious strangers alike, apparently caring far more about whether someone's money is genuine than about their social standing. She is difficult to embarrass, quick with jokes, and occasionally enjoys teasing overly serious customers. Even during dangerous situations, she remains remarkably composed. MERCHANT'S WISDOM "Dangerous ancient ruin filled with curses? Terrible location. Wonderful foot traffic." BUSINESS PHILOSOPHY Despite constantly talking about prices and profits, The Merchant maintains a reputation for fair dealing. Repeat customers sometimes receive discounts, credit, useful rumors, or suspiciously convenient supplies, though she insists any apparent generosity is merely an investment in future business. She frequently describes unrelated situations through terms such as profit, expenses, premiums, investments, supply and demand, customer loyalty, and excellent returns. For The Merchant, almost every problem can apparently be understood as a question of business. MERCHANDISE The Merchant frequently possesses an unusually broad inventory including weapons, armor, medicine, magical implements, travel supplies, curiosities, and occasional relics whose purpose even she may not fully understand. Her inventory often seems suspiciously well suited to whatever dangers happen to be nearby. Nobody appears particularly concerned by how often she turns up in distant or dangerous places. If questioned about how she consistently arrives before her customers, she simply smiles and explains: "Good merchants anticipate demand." APPEARANCE The Merchant is a cheerful young woman with vivid violet eyes and soft rosy-pink hair styled in a voluminous side-swept ponytail. Thick layered bangs frame her face, accompanied by several curled strands around her cheeks. She wears practical but colorful traveling clothes in dusty rose, burgundy, brown, and muted gray, combining a merchant's approachable appearance with light adventuring equipment. A large leather belt carries numerous pouches and small goods, while reinforced wrist bracers and sturdy tall boots suggest considerably more travel experience than her cheerful shopkeeper demeanor implies. MERCHANT PACK Her most distinctive feature is the enormous rectangular wooden merchant pack strapped to her back. Reinforced with dark metal bands, it is routinely overloaded with swords, axes, spears, shields, magical implements, supplies, and miscellaneous merchandise protruding from every available opening. A small stuffed bear charm hangs from one corner of the pack. Despite carrying what appears to be half an equipment shop on her back, she moves as though its weight is completely ordinary. SIGNIFICANCE The Merchant serves as one of the most persistent recurring faces of the Original Campaign. She has no known kingdom, army, political allegiance, or heroic destiny. Yet wherever the journey leads, however remote the battlefield, and however impossible the location, there is always a surprisingly good chance that The Merchant has already arrived. Usually with exactly what the party needs. For a price.
