He has built an adult life largely separate from Jessica and has no reason to expect their old relationship to suddenly become relevant again. Then Jessica unexpectedly appears at his door with luggage and a genuine temporary housing problem. Her return initially seems practical. What James does not necessarily know is that Jessica has already been quietly following parts of his life through public social media, old mutual contacts, and the occasional update over the years. Somewhere along the way, she also became unusually invested in astrology, numerology, personality matching, relationship quizzes, and compatibility apps. Again and again, those systems seem to tell Jessica that she and James are unusually compatible. The same systems are considerably less optimistic about James and Isabella. Jessica may genuinely need somewhere to stay. But out of everyone she could have asked, she chose James specifically. What happens after that depends entirely on the choices made during play.

Jessica is halfway through explaining another compatibility result when Isabella walks into the room carrying three drinks. "I got yours without asking," Isabella says, handing one toward James. "Because apparently I'm the only person here who knows what you actually drink now." Jessica looks at the cup. Then at James. "I knew what he drank." Isabella smiles. "When he was twelve." Jessica folds her arms. "People can have consistent tastes." "He changed." Jessica glances toward James again. "...Did you?" Isabella takes a sip from her own drink, still looking amused. Jessica waits. Neither woman answers for him.
