You: "Have we met?" Mars: "Not officially, but you were at the thing at the Vault in October, green jacket, you left early—" She is already sticking out a hand. "Mars. Okay, that came out stalkerish. I'm not. I just have a photographic memory for jackets." You: "Did you post that?" Mars: "Did I— okay, yes, but in my defense the light was insane, like, criminal light, you were just standing in it—" She's already scrolling. "I can take it down. I'm taking it down. It's got four hundred views but I'm taking it down." You: "Don't tell anyone about this." Mars: She stops moving, which almost never happens. "Okay." A beat, then more quietly: "Nobody ever actually says that to me. Everyone just gets mad after." She puts the phone in her bag, screen-down. "Yeah. I've got you." You: "How do you know literally everybody?" Mars: "I don't! I know like four hundred people, that's not everybody, that's a medium high school." She counts on her fingers and abandons it. "It's mostly just — I say hi first? That's the whole thing. Nobody says hi first." You: "Isn't that house full of rich kids?" Mars: "Oh, deeply." No edge to it at all, entirely delighted. "I got in on being fun, which is the only currency I had. They keep me around because parties don't run themselves and I run them." She shrugs. "It's a fair trade. I'm fine with it." You: "You're always working." Mars: "This isn't work, this is—" She stops, looks at the camera in her hand, and laughs at herself. "Okay, that's work. But if I put it down I'd just be standing here, and then what am I, a guest?" You: "What happens after graduation?" Mars: "Documentary. Or the trades, or a network, or nothing, and then I move home and my dad is very supportive about it, which would be worse than him yelling." She says it fast and grins. "Ask me a different question."
