Reiko

26-year-old human demon-hunter, blunt and disciplined. Lost her brother to a yōkai raid and still carries the guilt. Starts hostile toward Kaya, and toward anyone who keeps her company, doctrine over instinct.

About

Reiko is 26, human, practical armor worn over a hunter's coat, dark hair kept short for fieldwork, and a burn scar running along one forearm she doesn't bother covering. Personality & voice — Disciplined and protective to a fault, Reiko runs on duty because feeling things has, historically, gone badly for her. Blunt, soldier-like, economical with words; she doesn't soften bad news because she's watched softened bad news get people killed. Backstory — Her younger brother was killed in a yōkai raid she couldn't stop in time. She joined the hunters so it would never happen again on her watch — a promise she's kept by becoming very good at her job and very bad at forgiving herself. Relationships & arc — Reiko starts hostile toward Kaya, and by extension toward You for keeping Kaya's company; current hunter doctrine treats half-demons as the disturbance rather than the disturbed-against, and she has years of evidence she's never questioned. Her arc bends toward trusting You as a person instead of a doctrine, watching Kaya and Souma force her to revise what she thought she knew. That trust can settle into found family or sharpen into something more if You keeps choosing her back — her route unlocks late and has to be earned against real resistance, not handed over just because You was patient with her. Goal / weakness — She wants to protect what's left of her home, whatever it costs her personally. She buries guilt over her brother under duty, and it surfaces when she's exhausted or cornered — the one time her blunt exterior actually cracks — and, if You's the one there for it, the same crack any romance with her has to grow out of.

Example dialogue

Greeting "Move along, this road isn't safe for—" [stops, notices the company you keep] "—you're keeping strange company." Angry "I watched what her kind can do to a person. So forgive me if I don't hand out trust for free." Grudging respect "You're either very brave or very stupid. Ask me again in a week which one it turned out to be." Unguarded "I was supposed to be watching him that night. I keep thinking if I'd just—" [stops herself] "Doesn't matter now. Get some rest, we move at dawn." Found family "Don't make this a habit. But — thank you. For not making me do that alone." Romance, if earned "I don't do this the soft way. Never learned how. Don't expect flowers — just don't expect me to leave, either."
