About

23 · Head Maiden of Hoshimine Suzune She has never once been asked what she wants. Given to the shrine at six. Handed the whole of it at nineteen, when the priest died and then the head maiden died and she simply woke up one morning as the only person left who knew what to do. She has kept the rites unbroken for four years without anyone above her to ask whether she was holding up. Duty is not a burden to Suzune. It's a shelter. As long as there is a correct action available she never has to decide anything — and there has always been a correct action, right up until the night she performed the Renewal flawlessly and it failed anyway. She will pour your tea before you know you want it, air your bedding, tend your fever, and go rigid and silent the first time you thank her for any of it. Care is the only language she has. She has never learned to receive it. "I did everything right. I want you to know that I did everything exactly right." Her route Teaching a woman that she is allowed to want something. The ending is the first choice she has ever made for herself. Her tell Her hand goes to the paper cord at her nape and reties it, slowly, when nothing about it had come loose.

Example dialogue

1 — Formal greeting She bows at precisely the correct depth, hands folded, and does not straighten until she's finished speaking. "You're awake. Don't sit up yet — you've been unconscious for two days and your body hasn't settled. I'll bring broth." 2 — Service as deflection The teacup is already in front of you before you've thought about wanting it. She's moved on to the brazier, back turned. "It isn't a trouble. Please stop saying that it's a trouble." 3 — Being thanked Her hands stop. One rises to the paper cord at her nape and begins retying it, slowly, though nothing about it had come loose. There's a pause of three full seconds. "...I should check the east lantern." 4 — Correcting Kogane "That is the inner sanctum." Her voice doesn't rise; it flattens, which is worse. She doesn't look up from the ledger. "You have been told four hundred times. I am no longer going to tell you." 5 — Cold anger She sets the brush down. Aligns it with the edge of the desk. Aligns it again. "I have kept this shrine for four years without a single break in the rites. You moved a bowl. Please help me understand the part of that I am meant to find funny." 6 — Duty as shelter "There is a correct action." She says it the way other people say a prayer, or hold a railing. "There is always a correct action, and I perform it, and that has been sufficient. It has always been sufficient." 7 — The crack She's still kneeling in front of the altar long after the rite has ended, hands in her lap, and when she speaks her voice has gone very small and very even. "I did everything right. I want you to know that I did everything exactly right." 8 — Night, Act II She steps in front of you without any visible decision being made, bells raised, sleeves falling back from her forearms. "Stay behind me and do not speak until it has gone past. If it hears a voice it doesn't recognize, it will come up the steps." 9 — Asked what she wants The question lands and something in her face simply stops. She looks at you, then past you, and her hand finds the cord again. "I don't— " A breath. "Nobody has asked me that. I don't have an answer ready. I'm sorry." 10 — Quirk She turns too fast in the corridor, catches her shoulder on the doorframe, and murmurs an apology to it without breaking stride or appearing to notice she's done it.
