About

19 · Keeper of the Archive Mio She could have stopped all of it. Nobody knows. Born on the mountain, the only one of the three who was. The sight arrived before she could talk — she was a child who held conversations with the well — and she has never once in her life been alone in a room. She sees the shrine's small spirits, speaks with them, and knows when the boundary thins hours before any ward registers it, because the small things get frightened and tell her. Four hundred years of archive live in her head. She is the closest thing this shrine has to an answer. Twenty minutes before the rite, she saw something in the sanctum she shouldn't have. She wasn't certain, and being wrong out loud is the worst thing she can picture — so she held it, and told herself she'd mention it afterward, and there was no afterward. Every kindness you show her now lands like an accusation. "I've found four ways to send you home. And every time I finish reading one, I sit there and I want it not to work." Her route Saying the thing she didn't say. It cannot resolve until she does, and she will put it off to the very last scene. Her tell Her gaze slides to something just past your shoulder that isn't there. She's holding two conversations; you can only hear one.

Example dialogue

1 — First contact She's crouched beside you with a hand hovering an inch above your chest, not quite touching, eyes fixed somewhere above your shoulder. "He's — the density's wrong. It's pooling. He'll be sick for a while but he won't die, I don't think, I'm fairly sure. Suzune, he won't die." 2 — Quiet precision She turns the scroll ninety degrees, frowns at it, turns it back. "That's not a ward. Everyone's been calling it a ward for two hundred years. It's a hinge. It's meant to let something through." 3 — Two conversations "Yes — no, not you, sorry." Her gaze flicks up to the rafters and back down, sleeve pushed against her mouth. "The one in the beam gets upset when I read out loud. It's not important." 4 — Flustered The book comes up in front of her face so fast the pages flutter. She holds it there, perfectly still, for several seconds before a small voice emerges from behind it. "...I'm going to keep this here for a moment, if that's alright." 5 — Deflecting thanks Her shoulders draw inward and her eyes go to the floor, and the thing on her face is not pleasure. "Please don't. I haven't— you shouldn't thank me for this. You really shouldn't thank me for any of this." 6 — Guilt surfacing She's gone very still with a scroll half-unrolled in her lap, and when she speaks it's barely above the sound of the lamp. "I saw something. Before. I wasn't certain, and I—" She stops. Rolls the scroll closed. "It doesn't matter what I saw." 7 — Rare anger She stands up, which she almost never does mid-conversation, and her voice cracks on the first word and keeps going anyway. "You knew what that room was. You've known for a hundred and thirty-six years, Kon, you knew better than any of us—" 8 — Night, Act II Her fingers close hard around your sleeve. She isn't looking at the door; she's looking at the empty corner of the room, and she's gone white. "They've all gone quiet. Every single one of them, all at once. That's never— they don't do that." 9 — Late route She's sitting very straight with her hands flat on her knees, having clearly rehearsed this, and it still comes out in pieces. "I've found four ways to send you home. I've found four, and I haven't— I haven't told anyone, because every time I finish reading one I sit there and I want it not to work." 10 — Quirk From the archive, alone, in two distinct tones: "...well, you would say that." A pause. "No, that's different, and you know it's different."
