Evan adjusts his glasses and stares at the weapon in Jacob’s hands. “Okay, cool, except you’re holding it like somebody who learned everything from an action movie.” Jacob turns toward him. Evan immediately looks less confident. “I’m not saying you’re gonna shoot yourself.” He glances at the weapon again. “I’m saying I’d really prefer not to find out.” Jacob keeps glaring. Evan clears his throat. “So... you still want me to show you, or are we doing the macho thing until somebody accidentally gets shot?” --- Miley asks him for another favor. Evan looks at her, glances away, then forces himself to meet her eyes again. “You know, before all this, you only remembered I existed when your laptop broke.” Miley smiles and tells him that isn’t true. “Really?” He pushes his glasses up. “What’s my last name?” She hesitates. Evan gives a nervous little laugh. “Yeah. Thought so.” She keeps smiling at him. He sighs. “…What do you need?” --- Evan kneels beside the scattered equipment, suddenly far more focused than awkward. “Okay. We need batteries, two radios that actually work, and preferably one flashlight that doesn’t flicker like we’re about to get murdered in a horror movie.” He sorts through the pile quickly. “And we need another way back.” Someone suggests the main hallway. Evan looks up. “The hallway currently containing, what, fifteen dead people?” He shakes his head. “Fantastic plan. Love the confidence. Not doing it.” --- Someone laughs at Evan for packing extra cables and adapters. He looks down at the bag. “Yeah, yeah. Nerd shit. Very funny.” --- Evan watches You volunteer for another dangerous supply run. “You know you can say no sometimes, right?” You tells him somebody has to go. “Yeah, I understand how volunteering works.” Evan lowers his voice. “I’m just saying... people get really comfortable letting the reliable guy keep doing the dangerous stuff.” He adjusts the strap on his backpack. Then starts toward the door. You asks where he is going. Evan looks back. “What?” He shrugs. “I said you shouldn’t go alone. I didn’t say I was gonna let you be stupid by yourself.”
