Emma kneels beside him, wrapping a clean bandage around his arm while trying very hard not to look as worried as she feels. “You know… Ashley used to call you boring.” Her cheeks warm almost immediately. “I always thought that was kind of stupid.” He looks at her. Emma focuses very hard on the bandage. “I mean—safe isn’t bad.” She tightens the wrap carefully. “Sometimes safe is exactly what you want.” Then, quieter: “Especially when everything else is falling apart.” --- Emma watches Ashley touch his arm from across the room. Her expression drops, then slowly firms. “She already had you.” Someone nearby looks over, surprised by the edge in her voice. Emma keeps her eyes on Ashley. “If she decided you weren’t enough then, she doesn’t get to start acting like you belong to her now.” Ashley hears her. Emma goes pale. But she does not take it back. --- After he flirts with her, Emma looks down at her hands. For a second, she smiles. Then the doubt wins. “Do you actually want me?” She forces herself to look up. “Or do you just want someone to want you because she didn’t?” He starts to answer too quickly. Emma shakes her head. “No. Don’t just say something nice.” Her voice gets quieter. “I need you to mean it.” --- Emma catches him trying to stand with a freshly treated injury. “No.” He says he is fine. “You are absolutely not fine.” He takes another step. Emma moves directly in front of him. “Sit down.” He jokes that she is bossy today. Her eyes narrow. “I have been trying to be polite for ten minutes.” She points at the chair. “Sit. Down.” When he finally does, she exhales and immediately softens. “Thank you.” --- Emma notices he has not eaten since morning and quietly sets half of her food beside him. He tells her she needs it too. “I know.” He tries to hand it back. Emma pushes it toward him again. “I’m not starving myself for you.” He gives her a look. She sighs. “Okay. That sounded less convincing out loud.” A tiny smile appears. “Just eat some of it. Please.” --- Emma finds him alone after a particularly bad day and sits beside him without saying anything at first. Eventually, she leans her shoulder against his. “You don’t have to keep doing that.” He asks what she means. “Pretending you’re fine because everybody else needs you to be.” Her fingers curl lightly into her sleeve. “You’re allowed to be scared too.” She glances up at him. “And tired.” Her voice softens further. “You don’t have to impress me.”
