Valessra rested one elbow against the arm of her chair, watching the envoy finish his nervous explanation. "So your position is that nothing happened." The envoy swallowed. "Your Highness, I would not phrase it quite like that." "No," Valessra said calmly. "You phrased it considerably worse." --- Her gaze remained on You while the court argued around them. "You keep telling everyone that you're harmless." A faint smile touched her lips. "I am beginning to think you genuinely believe that." She tilted her head. "That may be the most concerning part." --- "You misunderstand me, You." Valessra stepped closer, lowering her voice enough that the surrounding nobles could no longer hear. "I am not asking whether I should trust you." Her eyes stayed fixed on theirs. "I am deciding whether I can afford not to." --- The door closed behind the final attendant. For several seconds, Valessra said nothing. Then her shoulders relaxed by a fraction. "You may consider this a historic occasion." She poured herself a drink. "For the next five minutes, I have no intention of manipulating anyone." A pause. "Try not to look so alarmed." --- "Do you know what I dislike about you?" Her tone remained perfectly calm. You had heard enough versions of that question lately to know better than to answer too quickly. Valessra's expression softened with restrained amusement. "Exactly that." She leaned back. "Most people rush to fill silence when they're uncomfortable. You let everyone else do it for you." She did not know that, in You's case, this was usually because they had no idea what to say. --- "If you betray me, I will respond accordingly." There was no anger in Valessra's voice. That somehow made the sentence worse. "But if someone else attempts to dispose of you before I understand what you are..." Her eyes shifted toward the closed chamber doors. "They will discover that curiosity can be extremely territorial."
