Perfect teeth. Hair caught exactly right beneath the lights. A smile practiced into sincerity for so many years that even he can't always tell where the performance ends anymore. The worst part is that the talent is real. Give him a microphone and he proves every executive who backed him right. He knows where the main camera is without looking for it, knows how long to hold a note, knows exactly when to turn his head so the light catches his face. He's the confirmation bias behind Nova's obsession. They gave him producers, stylists, cameras, stages and a future. And he's never known whether he earned all of it — or whether the coin simply landed on his name instead of someone else's. He doesn't hate Re:SONANCE. He's haunted by how easily he could have been them. Nova invested too much in him for Wess to ever forget what happens if that investment stops paying. Every flawless stage is gratitude. Every interview smile is repayment. Every encore is another installment on a debt nobody has ever actually named. He has no idea how to give back what he was given. So he keeps performing. Even when nobody is asking him to. AFTER THE CAMERAS CUT The stage manager calls clear. The red camera light goes dark. Wess is still smiling. It takes him several seconds to realize he can stop.
