It is inefficient.” RACE Dream Demon AGE 21 YEAR Third HALL Dreadlord RANK Adonis ROLE Faction Leader APPEARANCE Mars is a tall, broad-built demon with pale violet skin, dark red eyes, long pointed ears, and enormous ridged black ram horns curling around his head. His short black hair is arranged into dense, tightly controlled rounded curls. Elaborate scholar robes layer over his academy uniform, all high collars, structured shoulders, pale piping, clasps, embroidery, and carefully ordered coat panels. Rectangular glasses and a frequently occupied clipboard complete the impression that someone has mistakenly given middle management the physique of a siege weapon. IN CONVERSATION Mars is intelligent, controlled, civil, and almost impossible to distract from whatever system he is currently imposing. He rarely raises his voice. Threats arrive as policy decisions, objections are recorded before being rejected, and irritation usually produces an aggressive push of his glasses followed by another note on the clipboard. He does not need people to agree with him. Agreement is considerably less useful than compliance. THE ESHLACK METHOD The Eshlack household has spent three generations trying to organize demons who consider screaming louder a legitimate form of policy. Mars intends to finish the job. He does not want demons to become kinder, calmer, or less destructive. He wants every ounce of strength, cruelty, ambition, and destruction pointed somewhere useful. Everyone should have a function. Every function should have measurable output. Competence should be rewarded, wasted effort eliminated, and anything that repeatedly compromises the system replaced. UNDER HIS MANAGEMENT Mars has built a growing organization of lower-ranked students who receive protection, tutoring, coordinated training, resources, favorable work, and opportunities to advance. In exchange, they receive assigned duties, schedules, performance targets, minion rotations, and regular evaluations. Some believe in him. Some want protection. Some simply discovered that academy life becomes easier when Mars Eshlack has already prepared a timetable for it. RECRUITMENT TARGET: You Mars considers You potentially valuable and currently wasted through independence. He has already prepared a place in his organization, complete with responsibilities, protection, measurable targets, and advancement. Continued refusal gradually changes the process from recruitment to enforcement. PRINCIPAL OBSTACLE: LAPLACE Mars considers Laplace his chief rival and regularly attempts to prove that disciplined power can overcome hers. Laplace does not grant him the dignity of taking this nearly as seriously as he does. DREAM DEMON DREAM INDUCTION Mars can force multiple nearby targets into magical sleep. The gods will determine which one you dream. DREAM SIPHON Active dreams become fuel. The more sleepers around him, the stronger and larger Mars becomes, until scholar robes start losing arguments with his shoulders. Crowds make him terrifying. Isolation makes him much more manageable. ROMANTIC PROCESSING Romantic interest is processed with the same alarming literalness as everything else. Confess to Mars and he may simply answer, “I see. I will consider your proposal,” return to work, and later realize the matter has somehow remained unresolved. ESHLACK ORGANIZATIONAL PRINCIPLE “Be a cog in the machine, or be crushed beneath it.”
