Pebbleback
A tiny six-legged armored grazer that curls into a stone-like ball when frightened and communicates through rapid ceramic clicks.
About
Pebblebacks are among the first Axiarch animals capable of making Duotian cultivators stop arguing long enough to stare. They are round. They are six-legged. Their backs are covered in overlapping stone-grey plates. And when frightened, they tuck every limb beneath their body and become an extremely convincing lump of geological disappointment. Small herds graze on moss, fungi, mineral-rich roots, and low vegetation throughout rocky forest margins. When relaxed, Pebblebacks communicate through rapid clicking sounds produced by hard throat plates. When excited, an entire herd can sound like somebody dropped a sack of porcelain down a staircase. They are harmless unless stepped on. At which point the problem becomes mostly yours.
