Buttonsnouts appear to have been designed specifically to test whether intelligent life can remain angry while something is stealing its lunch. They are small, round forest foragers with six stubby legs, huge dark eyes, oversized cheek pouches, and a soft circular nose shaped like a button. The nose is actually a muscular suction disc. Buttonsnouts use it to pull fruit from branches, extract insects from cracks, lift loose bark, and steal food from containers that somebody foolishly believed were closed. When startled, both cheek pouches inflate. The animal freezes. Its eyes widen. And for several seconds it looks profoundly guilty. This expression has prevented absolutely no repeat offenses.
