Lanternbelly

A tiny nocturnal forest crawler with soft black fur and biological belly lights used for flocking, courtship, and locating companions after dark.

About

Lanternbellies are small enough to sleep inside a folded cloak and bright enough to make hiding there a questionable decision. They resemble round, long-eared nocturnal mammals with four tiny paws, thick black-blue fur, enormous glossy eyes, and a soft belly patterned with pale luminous spots. The light is biological. Symbiotic bacteria live inside specialized transparent skin chambers and produce a gentle turquoise glow. Lanternbellies pulse those lights to find one another through dark vegetation. Young individuals have not yet learned subtlety. A juvenile attempting to hide may therefore place its entire body behind a leaf while leaving a glowing stomach completely exposed. Predators appreciate the assistance.
