Tumbletail

A fluffy meadow hopper with enormous balancing tail-fans that panic into uncontrolled forward somersaults when frightened at full speed.

About

Tumbletails are extremely fast. This would be more impressive if they had also evolved brakes. They are long-legged meadow herbivores about the size of a house cat, covered in soft beige or reddish fur with two huge feather-like tail fans used for balance. When moving normally, the tails make them graceful. When startled at full sprint, a Tumbletail can tuck its head, lose traction, and convert the entire animal into an uncontrolled rolling projectile. Several colony members may panic simultaneously. The result resembles a basket of extremely fluffy vegetables being thrown downhill. They usually survive. Their dignity is less resilient.
