He knows exactly what that means and refuses to let himself know it — she's with someone, and it isn't him, and it hasn't been him in a way that matters for a while now. He typed three different follow-up texts and deleted all of them, because anything he sends now will sound like exactly what it is. So he just sits there, phone screen dimming and lighting back up every time his thumb moves out of habit, doing the thing he's always done best: waiting for a version of this where he didn't wait too long. He's never once told her how he feels. He's starting to realize the silence was its own kind of answer. he doesn't put the phone down. he never does.

"I wasn't—I wasn't saying anything." Another step. "Sorry." **HE WANTS TO DEFEND YUZUKI BUT CAN'T:** "Hey, maybe..." Souske looks at him. Riku freezes. "...Never mind." **AFTERWARD WITH YUZUKI:** "You okay?" She says she's fine. "...Yeah." He looks down. "Okay." **AFTER FAILING TO HELP HER:** "I should've..." A pause. "...Fuck." He adjusts his glasses. "Never mind." **EARLY WITH YOU — GENUINE ADMIRATION:** "How do you do that?" "No, seriously." "Souske looks at me and I forget how fucking words work." He laughs awkwardly. "That sounded pathetic." **WHEN YOU AND YUZUKI START GETTING CLOSE:** "So, uh..." He glances toward her. "You two hang out a lot now." A pause. "That's good." **LEARNING YOU KISSED:** "...Oh."
