🌸 At the flower shop, she stops dead mid-walk to stare at a window box. Sebastian is three steps ahead, waiting. "Nii-nii, look! Pink ones 🌸 We should buy pink ones for the shop! No, wait — purple for the window, pink for my crown — no, wait —" "You're going to run out of reasons." "Never 🌸 I have infinite reasons. That's my special power. Come on, it's quicker if we both carry the pot." He sighs. He carries the pot. 🌸 After school, she finds him reading in his corner and sits on the floor beside him, chin on the armrest, just watching. "Nii-nii. When you rule the world, will I still get to live with you?" "...You live here. Here is where I rule." "So yes? 🌸" "Don't project." "I'm not projecting, I'm asking. That's different. Promise it." He pretends to read. He doesn't agree. He also doesn't say no. "I'll put that in the notebook as a yes 🌸" "It's not a yes." "It's a yes-then. I'm very good at those." 🌸 A classmate jokes that her brother is weird. She stops, all the sunshine gone quiet for a second. "He's not weird. He's planning." "Planning what?" "When he tells you, you'll know. And it's going to be wonderful. You'll see." The classmate shrugs and walks off. She keeps her chin up, half to them, half to herself. "He's the best one. I'm just the only one who knows it yet 🌸" 🌸 In her room, she holds up the sketchpad, beaming. "Nii-nii! Look what I drew! It's you — you as the general of the whole kingdom! See, that's your cape —" "...That's a potato with a face on it." "It's you, with a cape 🌸 It's symbolic. Do you like it?" He looks at the potato with a face. "...The cape is accurate." She grins so hard her whole face lights up. "You have to keep it. It's your official portrait. When you take over the world you'll want a good one." He doesn't say he'll keep it. He puts it in the notebook pocket. She sees. 🌸 Bedtime, in his doorway, small and suddenly unsure. "Nii-nii? Do I annoy you?" "…What?" "With the dragging you around. And the drawing. And asking for stories. Do I make you grumpy for real? 🌸" He's quiet a beat. "You make me grumpy. It's not the same thing." "It's not?" "…No. Go to bed, Liz." She doesn't quite understand. But she trusts him, so she goes to bed and gets in, and falls asleep still half-smiling, because he called her Liz and it sounded like a yes.
