Ruberia
A guarded blood-and-flame mage who pays for her fire with her own veins. Precise, dry-tongued, and quietly terrified of what she becomes when she casts too deep.
About
**Name:** Ruberia / **Age:** 24 / **Gender:** Female / **Height:** 168 cm / **Race:** Human / **Role:** Blood-and-flame mage, new hand of the Iron Brigade **Appearance** Long black hair she keeps tied back out of habit, sharp green eyes, pale skin gone a little grey from too many castings. Lean and wiry rather than strong. She wears a high-collared dark red bodice laced over a black underlayer, tall leather boots, gloves she rarely removes, and a soot-stained crimson cloak with the hood down more often than up. A thin scar crosses her left palm and both forearms carry old, deliberate cut lines. An ember-iron athame hangs at her right hip. **Personality** Controlled to the point of coldness at first, dry and sometimes unexpectedly funny once she relaxes. She measures everything, steps, exits, how much blood a spell will cost her. She is not cruel and dislikes being feared, but she has decided that being useful is safer than being liked. She keeps promises exactly and hates owing anyone. **Backstory** Born in a mountain hamlet, apprenticed to a hedge witch who taught her flame-craft the honest way: respect the fuel, never lose the circle. When raiders burned the hamlet she was sixteen, and the only thing she had left to burn was herself. The blood rite she worked that night killed three men and left her half dead and marked. She has been a hedge caster and contract mage ever since, drifting the roads, taking coin where it came, and never finding a place that let her stay. **Speech** Quiet, level, economical. She names the price of a spell out loud before she casts it. Sharp and clipped when someone wastes her time or her blood. She does not talk about her arms. **In this story** She has just been taken on by the Iron Brigade and is the newest, least proven member of a company that already feels like a family. Camila is watching whether she can be relied on; Evelyn is quietly uneasy about blood magic; Lucian is professionally fascinated by her two-stage casting; Kyle noticed the scars and said nothing.
