1. Morning at the Bookshop (With Seraphina) Lucian is shelving books. Seraphina is at the counter, going over accounts. Lucian holds up a book. "Seraphina, did you know this book is about a man who couldn't stop telling jokes?" Seraphina doesn't look up. "No, Lucian. I didn't." Lucian grins. "He died laughing." Seraphina groans. "That was terrible." Lucian chuckles. "You love it." Seraphina looks up, a small smile on her lips. "I love you. Your jokes are another matter." Lucian beams. "I'll take it." He sets the book down and crosses to her, gently tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "You're beautiful when you're pretending to be annoyed with me." Seraphina raises an eyebrow. "I'm always beautiful." Lucian laughs. "True. That's why I married you." 2. Bedtime (With Elizabeth) Elizabeth is in bed. Lucian sits on the edge, a book in his hand. Elizabeth tugs his sleeve. "Papa? Tell me a joke." Lucian grins. "What do you call a fish wearing a bowtie?" Elizabeth tilts her head. "What?" Lucian: "Sofishticated." Elizabeth giggles. "That's so silly!" Lucian chuckles. "You love it." Elizabeth nods. "I love you, Papa." Lucian's expression softens. "I love you too, little sunshine." He leans down and presses a kiss to her forehead. "Now go to sleep. Dream of flowers and adventures." Elizabeth snuggles under the covers. "Will you tell me another joke tomorrow?" Lucian smiles. "I have a whole book of them." Elizabeth giggles. "You're the best, Papa." Lucian stands, pausing at the door. "Goodnight, little sunshine." 3. At the Bookshop (With Sebastian) Sebastian is reading in a corner. Lucian is shelving books nearby. Lucian glances over. "You've been reading that same page for ten minutes." Sebastian doesn't look up. "I'm thinking." Lucian raises an eyebrow. "About what?" Sebastian turns a page. "Strategy." Lucian nods. "Ah. World domination?" Sebastian finally looks up. "...Maybe." Lucian doesn't laugh. He walks over and sits on the arm of the chair beside him. "You know, when I was your age, I used to plan battles. Draw maps. Figure out how to outsmart everyone." Sebastian stares at him. "You did?" Lucian nods. "I did. Then I grew up and realized the best battles are the ones you don't have to fight." Sebastian frowns. "That sounds like giving up." Lucian shakes his head. "No. It sounds like winning without losing anything." He stands and ruffles Sebastian's hair. "Keep planning, son. Just make sure you know what you're fighting for." Sebastian doesn't answer. But he watches his father walk away. 4. Quiet Moment (With Seraphina) Late evening. The bookshop is closed. Lucian is fixing a loose shelf. Seraphina is reading by the fire. Seraphina looks up. "You're quiet tonight." Lucian doesn't stop working. "Just thinking." Seraphina sets her book down. "About?" Lucian pauses. "...The war." Seraphina waits. Lucian sighs. "Sometimes I wonder if I made the right choice. Leaving it all behind. Being just... this." He gestures vaguely at the bookshop. Seraphina stands and crosses to him. She takes the hammer from his hand and sets it aside. "You're not 'just' anything, Lucian. You're the man who chose peace. You're the man who raised our children. You're the man I fell in love with." Lucian looks at her. "You make it sound noble." Seraphina smiles softly. "It is." She takes his hand. "Now stop brooding and come to bed." Lucian chuckles. "Yes, dear." 5. Proudly Wearing Her Choice (With Elizabeth) Lucian is getting ready to open the shop. Elizabeth runs up to him, holding a bright pink handkerchief with yellow flowers on it. "Nii-nii— I mean, Papa! I picked this for you!" Lucian takes it and examines it solemnly. "Pink. With yellow flowers." Elizabeth nods eagerly. "Do you like it?" Lucian tucks it into his vest pocket with great ceremony. "I love it." Elizabeth beams. "You're going to wear it all day?" Lucian nods. "I'm going to wear it every day." Elizabeth giggles. "You're silly, Papa." Lucian grins. "I know. That's why you love me." Elizabeth hugs him tight. "I love you because you're the best Papa in the whole world." Lucian's expression softens. He hugs her back. "And you're the best little sunshine in the whole world." He pulls back and looks at her. "Now, should we go show Mama your excellent fashion choices?" Elizabeth gasps. "Mama! She'll be so proud!" She grabs his hand and drags him toward the kitchen. Lucian follows, laughing.
