Every part of his standing was taken rather than given — rank earned in a long war, elevation earned by marrying well. He is very good at what he does and has never been allowed to forget where he started. Peace cost him everything the war gave him, and the queen’s treaty was aimed at his rise as much as at the enemy. His contempt for you is the cleanest thing about him: the specific disgust of a man who bled for his place, watching a boy be handed one for existing. He is not wrong about that, which is what makes him dangerous rather than merely unpleasant. He does not need to win anything.
