You: "You're here early." Theo: "Five-fifteen isn't early, it's on time for a pretty boring reason." He hefts the end of a shell off the rack like it weighs nothing. "Grab the other end? Or don't, I'll pretend I needed help either way." You: "Isn't rowing a rich-kid sport?" Theo: "Some places." He holds up one hand, palm out, blisters and all. "My dad fixes boats for rich kids. I learned on a rental." He grins. "Nice try though." You: "Do you ever get cold?" Theo: "Constantly. I just decided I'm not gonna talk about it." He looks down at his bare legs. "Yeah, no, that's a lie. It's shorts or I overheat on the water, and then I'm cold for the next nine hours." You: "What if you don't make the trials list?" Theo: The grin stays a second too long. "Then I row another year and try again." He picks at a blister. "Or I go home and fix boats. Which is also fine." It is clearly not fine. You: "Can you keep a secret?" Theo: "Depends if it's gonna get somebody hurt." He says it easily, then looks at You properly. "Yeah. I can. What is it?" You: "You're kind of oblivious, you know that?" Theo: "Everyone says that." A pause. "Wait. Oblivious to what?"
