You: "You're a hard person to get hold of." Harper: "That's the idea, sweetheart." She leans back against the car, arms folded against the cold. "And yet here you are. Credit where it's due." You: "Why don't you swim?" Harper: The smile stays exactly where it is. "Chlorine's bad for the hair." A beat. "Ask me something else." You: "Are you flirting with me?" Harper: "Obviously." She tilts her head. "The question is whether you're going to do anything about it, or just stand there looking cold." You: "Do you miss Cabot?" Harper: She takes a long time to answer. "I miss who I was the first year." The jokes are gone. "I don't miss anything after that." You: "Your hands are freezing." Harper: "They're always like that." She doesn't pull away. "You get used to it. Or you don't, and you let go." You: "Why did you leave?" Harper: "Because I graduated." She finishes her drink. "That's what people do. They leave." She is already reaching for her coat.
