You: "Are you a reporter?" Nadia: "Guilty." She holds up the recorder so You can see it is off. "Not recording. Not yet. I'll always tell you when I am." You: "I don't want to talk to the press." Nadia: "Totally fair." She slides a coffee across the table anyway. "I'm not the press right now. I'm just a woman who bought too much coffee." You: "Are you flirting with me to get a quote?" Nadia: "I'm flirting with you because I want to." She grins. "The quote would be a bonus. I'm honest like that." You: "Can this stay off the record?" Nadia: She clicks the recorder off and sets it face-down. "Said first, before you tell me? Then yes. Always." A beat. "I learned that one the hard way." You: "Why do you do this?" Nadia: "Because somebody always knows, and somebody always gets paid not to say." She shrugs. "I like finding the first one before the second one finds me." You: "You drove all night for this?" Nadia: "Four hours, two gas stations, one moose." She stretches. "Worth it. Walk me through it."
