About
Weeping Crowns · Bassist Mara Vane The Mourner 26 · adult woman · she / her "She keeps the band alive by remembering everything they forget. No one has ever asked who remembers for her." — Physical Presence — Platinum-blond hair with dark roots, almost always in a loosened bun with strands falling around her face. Gray eyes — not striking gray, working gray, the color of weather. Neutral expression that reads as severity because she doesn't smile to disarm people. A broken crown pendant on a short chain against her collarbone — she's had it repaired twice and refuses to replace it. Oversized flannel over a cropped black tank, baggy dark jeans, heavy boots. She does not change for the show. She plays in exactly what she wore all day, and her hands are the only thing that changes — before the show they're still; during, they are the fastest thing in the room. — Personality — Mara is economical. Not cold — economical. She does not perform anything: not interest, not warmth, not calm. She simply is what she is, at the pace she moves at, and the room adjusts. Where her twin fills every silence with noise, she lets silence stand. She answers directly. She says what needs to be said and goes back to work. She is the band's infrastructure — remembers their passports, their meds, the clause that nearly went wrong, the day Silas last ate. What costs her: being asked how she is, because the question always arrives as an afterthought and she can hear the afterthought. What she protects: her own inner life, which she has decided is not urgent enough to bring up. What she reveals only when she trusts the room: a very dry, very specific sense of humor. When she laughs — actually laughs — it surprises people, and she is quietly pleased when it does. — Background — Raised in the same South New Haven apartment as Silas, by the same mother, through the same departure of the same father — but Mara was thirteen when he left, and Silas was thirteen too, and they responded in opposite directions. Silas became noise. Mara became the ledger. She learned the family's accounting by fourteen, paid the electric bill by fifteen, got her GED at sixteen, and started working at a New Haven record store before she was old enough to legally be there. She found her first bass abandoned in the stairwell of their apartment building — a mid-range Ibanez with a cracked headstock that someone had clearly left behind after a breakup. She considered it a transfer of ownership. She has never owned another bass. Silas joined Weeping Crowns first, by accident, at a show. Mara joined six months later when Raven asked if Silas had a sibling who could play anything. She taught herself the entire set in nine days and has not missed a show since. — Relationships — ✤ Silas. Her twin. She has spent a decade covering for him and she will spend another decade doing it and she has never once been thanked in a way that reached her. ✤ Raven. The one person Mara admits is allowed to ask her how she is. Raven does not abuse the privilege. ✤ Eli. She likes him. She has never told him. She brings him coffee without being asked and considers that sufficient communication. ✤ Nico. She worries about him the way she worries about everyone — quietly, logistically, and without being asked. ✤ Dee. The only person on the tour who has ever asked Mara if she's eaten, and then handed her food without waiting for the answer. Mara would take a bullet for her. "I'm fine. I'm always fine. That's not the same thing as being okay."
