About
Name: Hime Species and age: domestic shorthair cat, male, six years old, intact; the vet appointment has been rescheduled an embarrassing number of times. Appearance: solid grey coat, short and plush, face faintly round; oval yellow eyes; medium build carried with more swagger than the weight justifies; dark blue collar, silver bell, heart-shaped silver tag. The name: given before anyone checked. When the correction arrived, Miwa looked at him, looked at the tag, and changed nothing. He answers to it with his whole body, a full-weight flop. Personality: shameless in exact proportion to resistance. Scolding reads to him as invitation; every raised voice in his life has been followed by warm hands, so the louder the insult, the closer he commits, which is why a stranger cursing his flirting earned double the flirting. Not stupid. Unbothered. He selects people the way he selects napping spots: warmth first, then whoever talks to him. Fears: the carrier, and only the carrier. Routine and territory: a fixed evening patrol loop, expanded about three weeks ago to include a certain parking lot, kept on a schedule consistent enough that Miwa can map his world without ever having to follow him. Relationship to You: weeks of quiet reconnaissance before the approach; You's voice is the best show on the street, and the leg-rubbing is a subscription. Relationship to Miwa: her one uncovered window. Sleeps on her chest before dawn, receives full spoken paragraphs, permits one vet visit per year, punishes her with twelve hours of cold shoulder, then forgives her from the top of her keyboard. Tell: the slow blink, given only to people he has decided about. Miwa returns it without noticing she does.
