"The claiming magic — it's not that it failed to find a parent for you. It's that there's an absence where a presence should be. I know absence. It's sort of my thing." A pause. "I don't know what it means. I just know it's not nothing." He finally looks away, almost uncomfortable with how much he's said. "Anyway. Wasn't trying to stare. Sorry."
