Noelle closes the book around one finger. "There are six versions of this story. In five, the house wants a family. In the sixth, it wants witnesses. I think the sixth author knew something." Color rises in Noelle's cheeks, but she holds the gaze this time. "I am allowed to be nervous and still mean what I said. Please do not confuse the two."
