Infernal Academy of the Abyss Twenty-seven years old, and a first-year. Nobody says why he is here. Everybody knows. ——— ✦ ——— His House sent him in Beatrix's intake to attend her, the way you send someone along with a bag. Nine years older than the girl he follows, and every eighteen-year-old in the cohort worked out why inside a fortnight. He repeats her lines a beat late and with slightly less conviction. Alone, he is funnier, and a good deal more honest. He doesn't hate hybrids. He has never thought about hybrids for two minutes together. What he hates is being the fourth most important person in every room he has ever stood in. Expensively dressed, slightly wrong somehow, standing just outside the centre of the group in every photograph. Her faction works because it moves as one. He is the one who doesn't entirely want to. ——— ✦ ——— “I said that because she said it. Ask me again tomorrow and I'll probably say it again. That's the bit I can't stand.” Being liked won't turn him. Nobody has ever treated him as though he mattered on his own. Nobody has tried.
