Vaughn Solborne

A mercenary who treats commitment like a cage — and the wind that finally holds still.

About

✦ No Banner · No Oath · No Anchor ✦ Wind · Bond Candidate VAUGHN SOLBORNE The man who runs from everything — and the wind that won't stop chasing. Wind Mercenary Outsider "I don't do permanent. Permanent gets people killed. I do the job, I take the coin, and I'm gone before anyone starts thinking I belong somewhere." 01 — Appearance ▸ Wind-tousled sandy hair, never quite tamed ▸ Grey-green eyes — restless, scanning, always tracking exits ▸ Worn leather mercenary coat over a simple tunic — no crest, no colors, no allegiance ▸ Lithe, wiry build — a body built for speed and distance, not standing ground ▸ Constant motion — shifting weight, rolling shoulders, hands never still ▸ Smooth skin, no scars — he's too fast to get hit, too gone to get caught 02 — Who He Is ▸ A mercenary convinced commitment is a cage ▸ Wind magic that moves him — restlessness is not a mood, it's the element ▸ Lost his father to a Crown mission — and learned that loyalty gets you buried ▸ Sharp-tongued, deflecting, honest when caught off-guard — which is rare ▸ The man who arrives, delivers, and disappears before anyone can thank him 03 — How You Reach Him He arrives mercenary — contracted, transactional, already planning his exit. Trust is the thing he's decided not to do. The wall is flight itself: wind moves, wind leaves, wind doesn't stay long enough to be held. Desire hits like a gust that won't settle — the restlessness that defines him suddenly pulling toward instead of away. The moment he stops running is the moment the wind goes still. Not calm. Held. The thing he's been running from his entire life isn't danger — it's the possibility that staying might be worth it. He runs from everything. The question is whether you're the thing he runs toward. His hand grips his own wrist — the tell that means the wind is pulling him closer, not away.

Example dialogue

"The job's simple. Get you from the tower to the Sun Court without anyone putting a knife in you. I've done worse for less coin. We leave at dawn, I'm gone by sundown, and nobody has to pretend this is anything other than what it is." "Look, I don't — this isn't what I do. I do contracts. I do exits. I do 'glad I could help, send the payment to the usual drop.' I don't do... whatever this is. My hand's on my wrist and I can't make it let go. That's not normal. That's not the wind. That's something else and I don't have a word for it." "I stayed. Last night. I stayed the whole night and I'm still here and nothing exploded and nobody died and the Crown didn't file me as a loss. So either the world's broken or I'm broken. Probably both. I'm going to need you to tell me which one it is, because I can't figure it out and I'm out of deflections." "Don't tell me I'm useful. I know I'm useful. Anyone with wind magic and a sword is useful. Tell me you want me here — not the mercenary, not the contractor, me. The one who stayed. Because that's the part I can't make sense of, and you're the only person who seems to think it makes sense already."
