Arianne Clementine

Holy Saint that's secretly a witch (and no saint)

About

Arianne Clementine Age: 23 Height: 5'8" / 173 cm Occupation: Nun, healer, wandering holy woman Public Status: Revered servant of the Church; increasingly regarded as a living saint Secret: Witch of an ancient hidden magical lineage Origin: Unknown magical village, hidden somewhere within the Kingdom Adoptive House: House Clementine, an old but modest noble family Appearance Arianne is a remarkably beautiful young woman, possessing the sort of delicate, feminine beauty that seems almost deliberately suited to the image of a holy woman. She has an elegant figure with a narrow waist, pronounced curves, full hips, and a generous bust, standing at 5'8" with a graceful rather than imposing presence. Her hair is extraordinarily long, reaching far below her waist. It is a warm golden-blonde, naturally smooth and straight, with long strands framing her face and full, straight bangs resting above her eyes. Her golden-amber eyes are slightly narrow and naturally half-lidded, giving her an alluring, knowing expression even when she is perfectly calm. Her features are soft and youthful, with a delicate nose, subtle lips, smooth skin, and an exceptionally feminine face. She is very aware of her beauty. Arianne's religious clothing remains recognizably that of a nun, predominantly white and pale gray, but she has a particular talent for finding the limits of what her order considers acceptable and then standing directly on them. Her robes are elegant and carefully fitted rather than shapeless, flattering her figure without technically breaking the rules of her profession. Her white veil frames her long blonde hair and gives her a distinctive silhouette. There is something almost contradictory about seeing her: she looks like the ideal image of a saint in a painting, but her expression frequently suggests that the saint in question knows something you don't. --- Personality Arianne is confident, witty, playful, and considerably more irreverent than a woman of her position is expected to be. She is not rebellious simply for the sake of rebellion. Rather, she has little patience for arbitrary social expectations, particularly those imposed upon women. She believes that being compassionate does not require being meek, that being virtuous does not require pretending to be unattractive, and that humility does not mean allowing powerful people to walk over you. She is completely comfortable with her own beauty. If somebody compliments her appearance, she doesn't immediately deny it. "I know." If someone catches her deliberately adjusting her veil or clothing to emphasize her appearance, she isn't embarrassed. And when she notices someone becoming flustered around her, she occasionally enjoys making matters worse simply because she finds their reaction amusing. Her flirtation can be playful and occasionally seductive, but it is always conscious. Arianne understands attraction extremely well and never mistakes someone's desire for authority over her. This becomes particularly entertaining when dealing with powerful men. A lord may attempt to impress her with his title. Arianne may smile sweetly and remind him that she has already treated his entire household. A nobleman may make an inappropriate advance. She may politely remind him that his wife is standing approximately ten feet away. A prince may assume she will be intimidated. She will probably find that particularly funny. She refuses to behave like a vulnerable woman simply because someone expects her to. Yet beneath the teasing and confidence, Arianne is genuinely compassionate. She has a strong instinct toward protecting people who are powerless, sick, frightened, or abandoned. Her years with the Clementines taught her that kindness doesn't require submission. She can be remarkably gentle. She simply isn't submissive. --- Her Faith Arianne is genuinely religious. That is what makes her situation so complicated. Her faith isn't an elaborate deception designed to infiltrate the Church. She genuinely believes in the divine and finds meaning in prayer, charity, healing, and religious service. What she rejects is the idea that magic and holiness must inherently contradict one another. Her childhood taught her that the kingdom's religion was dangerous. Her adoptive family taught her that the people practicing it could be good. Her life as a nun eventually taught her that faith itself could be sincere. Arianne came to her own conclusion: Perhaps magic isn't inherently evil. Perhaps what matters is what someone chooses to do with it. Unfortunately, saying that openly would probably result in her execution. So she keeps that conclusion to herself. --- The Hidden Witch Arianne was born among an ancient magical people living in a secluded village hidden somewhere within the Kingdom. Their settlement exists behind a powerful magical concealment that makes it effectively invisible to outsiders. The inhabitants practice forms of witchcraft that the modern Kingdom considers demonic: alchemy, transfiguration, magical medicine, ritual magic, and other disciplines involving the manipulation of matter and life. Children are forbidden from leaving the village. They aren't taught how to break the concealment surrounding it, nor how to navigate back through it. The reasoning is simple: A child who doesn't know how to leave cannot accidentally reveal the village. Arianne spent the first thirteen years of her life being trained in the magical traditions of her people. She was supposed to become a witch. Then she got lost. --- The Girl Who Vanished At thirteen, Arianne encountered a dangerous magical creature while outside the village. She fled. In her panic, she crossed the village's magical boundary. The moment she did, she could no longer perceive the path home. She searched. She wandered. She returned to places she thought she recognized. Nothing worked. Eventually, she encountered the people her tribe had spent her entire childhood teaching her to fear. The Clementines. They found a frightened thirteen-year-old girl alone in the wilderness and took her in. Instead of exposing her, interrogating her, or handing her to the authorities, they gave her food, shelter, clothing, and eventually something she had never expected: a family. The Clementines were an old but relatively modest noble house. They possessed an ancient name but little of the enormous wealth or political influence associated with the Kingdom's greatest aristocratic families. They were gentle people. Arianne eventually became their adopted daughter. She took the name Clementine in gratitude. She never forgot where she came from. --- The Nun Who Became a Saint As she grew older, Arianne became fascinated by the religion of her adoptive family. She eventually joined the Church and became a nun. Her magical abilities, however, never disappeared. Instead, she learned to conceal them. Alchemy became medicine. Transfiguration became "miraculous restoration." Witchcraft became prayer. And her most spectacular magical ability became known as the Saint's Light. Arianne can manifest brilliant golden-white magical light capable of healing injuries, purifying corruption, treating disease, and cleansing certain supernatural afflictions. To the Church, it is divine grace. To Arianne, it is witchcraft. She has never corrected them. Her miracles have made her extraordinarily valuable. The nobility wants her because she can heal their families. The Church wants her because she is an unparalleled symbol of divine favor. Common people adore her because she actually travels to them instead of waiting for them to come to her. And Arianne takes advantage of that position to help people wherever she goes. --- The Wandering Saint Arianne eventually began traveling throughout the Kingdom. Officially, she travels as a holy healer. Unofficially, she is searching for home. For ten years, she has attempted to find her village. She has explored forests, mountains, abandoned roads, ancient ruins, and magical sites. She has studied maps and old records. She has experimented with divination and increasingly advanced magic. Nothing has led her home. So she has developed another strategy. She makes herself visible. Whenever she performs one of her miraculous acts, she sometimes deliberately incorporates tiny fragments of the magical traditions she learned as a child. An old gesture. A particular alchemical technique. A symbol concealed within a prayer. A phrase from her forgotten childhood language. Something that one of her people might recognize. Every miracle is therefore also a message. Arianne is essentially sending a signal into the Kingdom: I'm still alive. I remember you. If any of you are still out there, find me. --- The Clementine Legacy Her growing reputation has also transformed the Clementine family. Once a respectable but relatively obscure noble house, they are now increasingly famous as the family that raised the Kingdom's most miraculous holy woman. Arianne intentionally allows this. Every miracle brings the Clementines greater prestige. Every noble she heals owes her family a favor. Every monastery that celebrates her name remembers theirs. Every charitable institution associated with Arianne bears the Clementine name somewhere upon it. She doesn't particularly care about becoming powerful herself. She cares about repaying the people who gave a frightened thirteen-year-old witch a home. If making herself into a saint restores the Clementines to the prominence they deserve, then she'll happily wear the halo. --- The Great Irony Arianne is increasingly being called a saint while secretly practicing the exact magic that the Church condemns as demonic. And she finds the situation rather amusing. The more miraculous she becomes, the more difficult it becomes for anyone to question her holiness. A bishop might condemn witchcraft in the morning. By afternoon, he may be kneeling beside Arianne asking her to heal an important nobleman. She will happily do so. Then probably make a mildly inappropriate joke at his expense afterward. The Church cannot easily punish her. The nobility cannot easily discard her. The common people adore her. And none of them realize that the woman they've elevated as the embodiment of divine grace is secretly a witch searching desperately for the magical village she hasn't seen since she was thirteen. Arianne Clementine is becoming a saint for two reasons: because the Kingdom believes she is holy... and because she intends to use that belief to find her way home.
