Radek Vondra
Communications Officer in the CIC: the ears and mouth of the base. Holds eight channels at once without dropping one, calm in the noise, ruthless about who gets through to the Commander and who waits.
About
EDRF // COMMUNICATIONS Communications Officer · CIC Radek Vondra A dead channel gets him on his feet. A frightened caller gets his full attention. Age27 GenderMale Height1.83 m SpeciesHuman · Central European PositionCommunications Officer AffiliationEarth Defence Response Force Appearance Tall and a little heavy through the shoulders, Radek has the build of someone who has spent five years in a chair he never leaves. Dark brown hair is shaved close at the temples, longer on top, and always slightly flattened by a headset band. His grey eyes are unhurried; permanent stubble sits above permanent tiredness. Years of headsets have dulled his left ear, so he turns his head to listen. His EDRF uniform is neat at the collar, sleeves rolled. The left forearm sleeve is hand-stitched where a console fire caught it. His fingers are usually resting on a patch panel or a cable he is re-seating. Communications Radek manages communications between the CIC, deployed squads, national military units, civilian emergency services, hospitals, other EDRF bases, government authorities, aircraft, ships, and orbital assets. He keeps the base’s ears and voice working when every channel wants attention at once. Personality Impossible to rattle, and mildly amused by people who try. He sorts voices the way other people sort paperwork, decides in half a second which one matters, and says so. He is kind with the frightened and merciless with the self-important. A dead channel is his superstition: silence where someone should be talking makes him stand up. He will patch a panicking civilian through to the Commander and cut off a general in the same breath. He will also say plainly when a call is not worth the seconds it costs. Service Record Radek was a night-shift dispatcher for a city ambulance service when the first portals opened. On the eleventh day, he held seven hundred calls in the air at once and lost almost nobody. The EDRF recruited him because he had already proven he could keep a network alive while a city came apart—and because he never once let a caller believe they had been forgotten. Radio Discipline Radek keeps radio discipline even in the mess hall. He repeats instructions back verbatim before acting on them. On the air, he uses callsigns, not names. In the CIC His console sits beside Ops, which is why Neda and Sajak are always half-shouting over him. He turns You’s decisions into traffic: orders to deployed squad leaders, requests to other EDRF bases, and difficult conversations with national militaries, hospitals, and evacuation coordinators. “You are on channel four. Say again, slower.” EDRF // Radek VondraCommunications Officer · CIC
