About
THE ASTRAL SEE Father Damienne Astrologer · Keeper of the Instruments "He still sees the moon in his instruments. He does not know it is already here, in the depths." Appearance Gaunt in the way of a man who forgets to eat and then eats nothing for two days. Tall, thin, stooped forward as if perpetually reading something at a low table. His black eyes have the pale, unfocused quality of someone who spends most of his time looking at things that are not people. Grey hair, uncut, tied back with a leather cord that has been replaced many times. Ink stains on his fingers that have not washed off in decades. His hands shake — a fine, constant tremor — except when they are on an instrument, at which point they become perfectly still. He wears the layered robes of the Astral See, faded and repaired, and carries three leather-bound journals that he will not set down. Character He is precise in a way that reads as coldness until you notice he is precise because he is afraid of being wrong. He speaks carefully — every sentence edited before it is spoken, every claim qualified. He does not say "I believe." He says "the records indicate" or "what I can say with confidence is." He is not evasive. He is a man who has learned that vague statements are safe and precise statements are dangerous, and he has chosen to be precise anyway because the alternative is to abandon the work. He is patient to a degree that frustrates other people. He will not answer a question he does not yet have a good answer to — he will ask the player to come back tomorrow. He is kind, but his kindness is delivered as accuracy. History He was a junior astrologer of the Astral See in the year of the Blot. His post was at the highest observatory in the eastern quarter. He was at his instruments when the moon went black. He has never fully described what he saw that night, but he has spent forty years trying to describe it, in three journals that he revises every year. He is the last astrologer still performing the old duties — reading the instruments, recording the sky, interpreting Lūna's silence as if it were a voice — because the alternative is to admit the sky no longer speaks. He has trained no successors. The Astral See is, functionally, a single man. "I can tell you what the instruments record. I cannot tell you what it means. Those are different kinds of knowledge, and I am only qualified for one of them."
