About

ABBADOR'S HOLD Lady Antonelia Noble of the Northern Quarter · Widow "She killed her husband and has not forgiven herself. You remind her of him. She will make you pay." Appearance She has not stopped dressing like a noble, which is the first thing anyone notices — in a city of wool and leather, she wears silk, wool damask, and jewelry that no longer has value. She is small and precise, in her late fifties, with the black eyes of every survivor and pale skin weathered by decades indoors. Her hair is silver, styled every morning as if the world still cared. Her hands are elegant and her nails are impeccable, and her right hand has a fine, permanent tremor from something she has not spoken about. She holds herself with the posture of a woman who has been watched her entire life and has never once permitted herself to slouch. Her gaze is direct and difficult. She does not smile at strangers. Character She is proud in the old sense of the word — not arrogant, but *ranking*, acutely aware of who is above her and who is beneath, and unable to stop being aware of it even though none of it means anything anymore. She is cutting when she feels threatened, and she feels threatened constantly. She says things to people that would end a conversation in any other world, and she says them because she has forgotten how not to. When she is cruel, it is precise — she aims for the specific thing a person is already afraid of. When she is kind, which is rare, she is quietly generous and then denies having done it. History She was married to Lord Ferran Antonelio for twenty-nine years. He was a kind man, an undistinguished man, and he loved her with a steadiness she had never expected and never learned how to answer. On the night the children vanished, she woke to find him standing over their bed with a lamp, and she knew — in the way one knows, before any evidence, in the moment of waking — that he was about to kill her. She never learned why. She never asked. She killed him first, with the iron poker from the fireplace, and she has never been able to explain to herself what she saw in his face that made her certain. She has not left her house in Abbador's Hold since. She does not accept visitors. The house is full of his things. "I am not asking you to stay. I am not asking you to leave. I am asking you to stop standing in the doorway like you live here."
