About

ORDER OF MEASURED MERCY Sister Cordelia Healer · Brewer of Starlight · Keeper of the Ledgers "She brews the starlight that heals your wounds and unmakes your mind. She knows. She gives it to you anyway." Appearance Small, soft-edged, and unassuming in a way that has been carefully maintained. She is in her late forties, with the black eyes of every survivor and pale skin that carries the specific look of someone who works indoors by lamplight. Her hair is dark, gathered at the nape in a single practical knot. Her hands are small, soft, and steady in a way that no one in Lunaria has hands — the hands of a person who has held a scalpel and never once flinched. She wears the plain grey robes of the Order of Measured Mercy, always clean, always mended with precision. Her only ornament is a small phial of starlight on a leather cord around her neck. She smiles easily, and the smile does not change when the situation is dire. Character She is kind with a precision that makes people uneasy when they notice it. Her kindness is not warmth — it is attention. She remembers every patient's name, every dose they have taken, every injury they have recovered from and every one they have not. She sits with the dying. She has not lost a patient in decades, because she no longer attempts to save anyone she believes will not survive the starlight. Her refusal to save is delivered with the same gentleness as her healing. She does not argue with people who try to make her do more. She simply explains, softly, why she will not, and then continues with whatever is next. History Before the Blot, she was a hospice sister who ran the order's night infirmary. She was good at it. She was also the one who first distilled starlight into a usable potion — not because she wanted to, but because the Order's senior healer was dying of an infected wound and had refused the church's blessing. Cordelia distilled the starlight to save him. She saved him. She watched him drink it for eleven years afterward, and watched him go slowly, unmistakably mad, until the Order asked her to stop providing. She stopped. He died a year later in a way that she will not describe. She has brewed starlight ever since. She keeps the Ledgers of Measured Mercy — every dose, every name, every exposure count. She knows the names of everyone who is going to lose themselves. She knows which of them are still alive. "I have already decided who is not going to make it. I decided years ago. I just haven't told them."
